It's much harder to bully in an American college.

It's not just the maturity of the people (altho that helps some). It's primarily the logistics. College campuses are really large. You don't have a set schedule. Even if a bully wanted to bully someone, it's hard to find an appropriate target. Even if they find a target, it's hard to corner that target because they can just switch classes, take a different route to class, etc. The maturity of the people help also because you're much more likely to find others who will stand up to the bully.

Now, while disease might make you a target for bullying in high school on down, it's politically incorrect to make fun of someone for a disease. Too easy to identify as "discriminatory", so too easy to cause mass disapproval.

The bullying in college have to be in places where the victims can't run. So, this mainly confines it to places like frats/sororities and sports teams. They call it "hazing" though, and people sign up knowing some version of it will happen to them.

For regular folks, you'll primarily find it in dorms. It's where you live so you can't run. However, if there's a good Resident Advisor, it gets taken care of pretty quickly.

There typically isn't alot of bullying unless you join a fraternity. There can sometime be bullying that takes place there. Depending on the school you attend, for the most part people don't make fun of one another too much (at least not to your face). Most of the time, if some one is going to make fun of you in college you will never know they are doing it. If you live in the dorms I would guess that you are susceptible to some level of joking and "poking fun" of but typically it is not spiteful, hurtful or mean. I am sure it happens, it certainly isn't nearly as widespread.

To me, bullying denotes a certain amount of spiteful and vindictive behavior repeated over a course of time. Like
individual(s) persistantly preying on another individual(s) on more than one occassion. With that definition bullying is fairly rare in most college situations, not only because of maturity but mainly because of lack of opportunity. Most colleges or universities are much larger than your average grade school and therefore make it less likely you will encounter the same individuals on a regular basis. I believe most instances of "bullying" on a collegaite level occur because some students simply interpret innocent play as malicious. Be comfortable with yourself adn I'm sure you will find most people can be at ease with you. As far as ridiculing people aflicted with a specific disease, I can't say I have ever heard of such a persecution on an educated level, unless of course your disease is aids.

In public schools there are the bullies, the football players that get the cheerleaders, and everyone usually has their own "clique". There are also schools such as private schools with just females or just boys, then there is the other type of private school that includes both boys and girls but have to wear uniforms. The movies and television series are what public high schools are really like in the United States.
