I assume you're talking about the Sony SVR-S500 HDD recorder?
There is a software problem regarding the EPG updating element. Check to see what version software is installed on your unit - you'll need to go through your menu options to get to the technical info section - and make sure it's V1.5.7 . If it's V1.3.5, there will be another over-air download on 24th Feb between 1.00am and 4.00am in the morning.
However, there is also a secondary EPG fault, which is currently under investigation, where as the 7 day update starts to expire, it fails to update with new information. It's not thought to be linked to the original fault though.
Simply taking the unit back to a shop will not make any difference at all. It's an inconvenience at the moment, but give it time! If you need more info, feel free to get in touch through my profile.

its sounds like the software is bolluxed
I had a similar problem on a Sony DVD recorder a while ago and what I did to clear the fault was:-
turn the equipment off, remove the plug, wait for say 10..15 seconds... or a couple of minutes if you prefer.. it can take electronics that long to fully depower, then plug it back in, turn it on.
like most modern electronincs the front "power" or On / Off button doens't actaully turn the device off it suspends it, so its unlikely to reboot the computer controlling it. Ensuring the device is fully depowered and then starting from scratch again should force a system reboot, whihc in my case cleared the fault
good luck

the epg is part of the freeview set up software, if you can't recieve freeview then the epg has no idea what is on, therefore it wont work.
If you can recieve freeview, then it is a software issuse, send it back to the shop to get it fixed.
Hope this helps you out
