It means that you have to do things in a set order to progress the game. For example, in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, when you have to collect S-K-A-T-E, you don't have to collect them in that order. You could collect them like T-S-A-E-K and still win since the game is non-linear. However, if the game was linear, you would have to collect S-K-A-T-E in order to win.

Simply put, linearity denotes that the objectives of the game must be completed in a fixed sequence, sometimes revealing elements of the plot, in order.

You have one path to follow. There aren't like side adventures and such. Think almost like the old side scrollers.
