They were taking the mick out of Bruce Springsteen as apparently all his songs are about cars and girls. (Mr Macaloon has obviously never heard Nebraska, Ghost of Tom Joad etc and was not really paying attention when he listened to Born in the USA)
Steve McQueen was a much better album

Apparently Paddy McAloon was having a go at Bruce Springsteen in this song and having a pop at the fact that most of Brucie's stuff seemed to be whinging on about lasses and motors; hence the song title. Agreed though with one of the other answers, putting your lad in a vat of acid would clearly hurt tons more!

Apparently it was a dig at Bruce Springsteen. Paddy McAloon felt his songs were angst ridden, compared to the trivial and meaningless ones of Springsteen.
