Unless you are running it in Safe Mode, you are running all other open programs in the background.

Go into Safe Mode and rerun.

Turn your PC on or Restart. As soon as you see the black and white screen, press and hold the F8 key. Continue holding until you see a black and white menu. Safe Mode is F3 or F5. From Start, Programs, run your AV program.

When it is finished, Restart. You will probably find your icons messed up. No biggee. Drag them back into place.

norton has a habit of taking over your control the same as zone alarm try removing and try avg free or kapersky or f.secure

I had norton and Zone alarm and they were making my computer very slow.I now have ntl netguard.

your pc may be low on memory/ram
if thats the case you will need to install more memory
click start my computer than c-drive (left click) than properties it will tell you how much memeory you have, what memeory is free etc...

Low RAM. I recommend 2GB.
Mine smokes.
