Slate looks pretty much like shale but is a tiny bit shinier. If you drop it from a small distance, it is supposed to "ring" when it hits a hard surface. Phyllite is substantially shinier, and smoother. Schist has bare eye visible grains and flakes of shiny platy minerals- most likely muscovite and biotite.
