As 10BaseT and Cat5 are different names for the same thing, it does not matter. 10BaseT is the type of signal that travels over an ethernet cable. Cat5 (short for category 5) is the type of wire inside the cable. For a cable to carry a 10BaesT signal, it has to be a Cat5 wire. So if it is 10BaseT, it is Cat5 and if it is Cat5 it will be 10BaseT.

(They are now producing a Cat6 cable - but it also works for 10BaseT. The only difference is the Cat6 cable is Cat5 wires with a twist in the wire every few feet that helps the signal travel a longer distance. SO you can treat Cat6 as if it is Cat5).

Hope that helps....

10baseT refers to the physical form factor of the cable, the last T stands for "twisted pair", which is the type of the cable, the 10 is a remembrance of the old Ethernet (10Mbps) networks, now the Local networks can support up to 100/1000Mbps.

The category (Cat5) refers to some physical characteristics of the cable, it is a better quality cable, cat3 is used for telephone cables, not data transmission cables. In most of these there is a label "CAT5" that you can see printed in the cable. There is a Cat6 also.

For making the things better, the same cable is referred to as "UTP" (unshielded twisted pair)

Let me break it down 10base T
the 10 is the speed 10mbps you can have 10 bast T, 100Base T, 1000BaseT

Base is the type it is either Baseband or Broadband.

T stands for Twisted Pair Cat 5 is a type of copper twisted pair wire as are 5e and 6. the difference is the speeds you can obtain on the wire, the ammount of crosstalk. Cat 6 is better than cat 5e and inrelation cat5e is better than cat5 if you are doing a new install you would use cat 6 or better Twisted pair.

if it were 10base2 the two would be for coax cable with a max distance of 185 meters.

10 base 5 is coax cable with a distance of 500 meters

and 100obaseF or FX is fiber optic.

hope this helps
