I personally have something against my children saying the pledge of allegiance to the flag in school. My kids are 5(kindergarden) and 9 (3rd grade) My kids ask me why can they not stand up in the morning with the other children and say the pledge, so I have told them that they are to only pledge their loyalty to God himself, not a flag or country. After I explained this to them, they fully understood and absolultely do not want to say the pledge at all. No offense to all those that do. That is their business. But as for me and my family we will pledge our oaths to God himself. ONLY What do you think?

I do tell my children to stand up as a sign of respect, but as for placing their hands over their hearts and making an oath, NO THEY DO NOT. I have nothing against the country that I live in-- this is about not pledging allegiance to a IDOL. Like I said before, I simply believe that that my allegiance should be to God himself. ONLY and that is it. But thanks to everyone for your comments.

You pledge your allegiance to the Country and your spriit to God. I understand your concern that you believe your children are pledging their allegiance to an IDOL - the flag, and in some regards I agree with you. Perhaps changing the words of the pledge to " I pledge my allegiance as an American Patriot of the United States of America" -- The pledge broken down to its smallest form is brainwashing

Yes, I pledge allegiance to the flag. As a child, it was because I had to or the teacher would admonish me in front of the class. As an adult, we have the capacity to think about these things and now I want to do it. There are a lot of things wrong with America, but there is no place else I'd rather live. I think people who hate America (and I'm not directing this at you personally) should leave. The main problem as I see it is that everyone is too busy and too apathetic to really get informed and involved. For example, decent Christians have allowed the radical religious right to paint itself as the only form of Christianity in our country. The rest of us have been quiet and allowed them to push our nation toward civil war when we should be speaking up. Bad things can only happen when good men (and women) do nothing. I did not see any answer for the exhaust trails except that they are just that--exhaust trails. And I have never heard any other explanation.

Interesting.. I stopped saying the Pledge when those self-righteous legislators added the phrase "under god" back in the mid-1950's. They took what was a beautiful and patriotic statement and made it a religious statement. Since that time, I stand respectfully and mute.
Your children have the right to make certain decisions at their age and you should guide them. I think you should let them make the decision to stand, recite - or not. At their age, their opinions are not yet fully formed but they are subject to peer pressure. How they are viewed by their classmates is very important to them.
If they have made the decision not to recite the pledge, then they should be told that is shows respect of others and good manners to stand. It is simply good manners.
I don't agree with your attitude about god and such but, if I found myself in your church, even though I don't believe what goes on there, I would stand when the congregation stood - just like I stand when the pledge is recited in public....it is called respect.

Let me guess? Jehovah's Witness, are you? I bet your kids aren't allowed to partake of other kids' birthday or holiday treats either...I've helped out in my kids' classrooms throughout the years and came across a few of these.
I don't understand how you people equate pledging allegience to a flag to idol worship, however, it's good that you've taught your children to be respectful and to respect what other people do. I do not agree with you. I take pride in saying the pledge and singing the Nat'l Anthem and do not think it is idol worship.
I know some nice people who are J.W.'s but I must say, your religion seems like a bit of a cult to me.

Yes, it is true. Only God deserves our worship.
When people worship the state, people like Hitler come to power and take over because the state worshippers will allow it.
Hitler also wanted the Germans to say pledges and wave flags. Look what it lead to.
No country in Europe, as far as I know, forces people to repeat some kind of pledge. That's nationalism and look what it lead to 70 years ago.
Weak minded people who worship the state are the cause of all wars. People blindly follow their leaders into wars etc.
If everyone became smart and told their leader who wanted to start a war to go fight his own war, there would be no wars, because nobody would show up.

honey!!! you should not have a problem with the pledge, in some countries they are executed if they don't pledge allegiance. You are at a public school, funded by the government which is founded on these basic principles we pledge in our allegiance. This is just a lesson in respect that your child is learning in his school. This is a good thing, respect for country, respect for the teachers, respect for parents, respect for themselves and respect for the freedoms we have. PS.....answering to the one who said 'people blindly follow leaders into war' it just doesnt work that way in this day and age....the bad guys think that they wil only go to heaven if they kill us all or convert us....so duh, we have no choice but to fight this war...

I THINK THAT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY HAVE NO VALUE FOR THOSE THAT HAVE DIED TO PROTECT THE RIGHTS THAT YOU HAVE TODAY. MAYBE YOU AND YOUR KIDS WOULD LIKE TO BE COVERED FROM HEAD TO TOE IN A BURKA AND BE TOLD WHAT TO DO ALL DAY LONG. YOU SHOULD HAVE LOYALTY AND RESPECT FOR THE COUNTRY THAT YOU CALL HOME. THE PLEDGE IS SOMETHING THAT INSTILLS PATRIOTISM IN ONE. IT ALLOWS YOU TO BELIEVE AND NOT TAKE FOR GRANTED THE LIBERTIES THAT YOU ARE AFFORDED TODAY BY THOSE THAT HAVE DIED FOR THE FLAG AND FOR THIS COUNTRY. THE FLAG IS A SYMBOL OF THE GREAT NATION WE LIVE IN. RELIGION AND THE FLAG ARE TWO SEPARATE ISSUES. YOU CAN BE LOYAL TO YOUR GOD BUT YOUR GOD DOES NOT LIVE ON THIS LAND AND IF HE DID HE TOO WOULD APPRECIATE THE SACRIFICES THAT WERE MADE IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO STAND UP AND BE HEARD. YOU ARE AS ANTI AMERICAN AS THEY COME. REMEMBER IT'S ONE NATION UNDER GOD INDIVISIBLE WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL. LIBERTIES THAT YOU HAVE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF.

"Pledge allegiance" means that you promise to support and defend the "country for which it stands." "One nation under God."
It means you promise not be a traitor like many Democrats today.
Guess what; they don't like the Pledge of Allegiance either.

this country allows you to have the right to honor the God of your choice. You need to honor the flag of the country gives you that freedom. You are also taking away the freedom of your children to honor that country.
