I can spell words and make myself sound intelligent. I know how to use a spell check, dictionary, and a thesaurus. I am 18 and have no problem spelling words the way that I was taught in school. I am graduating this year, and thus far, my education has been terrific! I am going on to college to become a teacher, yet, I have no problem with the way teens my age write. Some teens do it because they cannot spell well, or are too lazy. Often times, when I am on IM (instant messenger), I abbreviate words because I am trying to get a message across and it takes less time to type out "yur" instead of you are or "prolly" instead of probably. I would never write like this for school nor for work, that's disrespectful. I think the main reason teens write like this is it has to do with fad's and fitting in. If everybody else is doing it, you have to also. It's part slang and part of our generation trying to distinguish themselves from those past. But then, you also have the kids who are trying just to annoy the piss out of you by typing so you aren't able to read it!
Cuz iz vahary annoyin ta hav sum1 read yur writin' that ya don' wan ta (Cuz it's very annoying to have someone read your writing that you don't want to)

I remember years ago, in the eight grade, our class had a big discussion about writing the way things sounded. The conclusion of the class was phonetic spelling may be easier for the writer, but the reader will find it more difficult to understand. Because the writer already knows what they are saying, it is more important that you write in the manner that makes the most sense, so the reader understands the message.
So, if the reader is mostly illiterate, write phonetically. If the reader is educated, respect his education and write to the best of your abilities; using correct spelling and grammar. And, if a spelling verifier is available, USE IT!

I think they do it for the express purpose of making adults angry. Teens don't respect adults, for the most part, so it makes perfect sense that they'd do anything and everything just to make us mad. The loud music, the crazy hairstyles, clothes, slang, horrible grammar and spelling etc...most of them don't even like it, but if it will bug adults, they do it. Maybe we should just tell them that we hate it when they eat vegetables. They'd probably start eating broccoli by the pound.

A certain amount of the odd spelling is the result of using abreviated forms suitable for internet chat. The rest is the result of bad breeding, bad education, and bad manners.

Laziness. And many like the " ghetto" slang. That shows how cool and " with it" they are. And many sleep through high school classes, so you are right... bad education. I usually don't read their questions for that very reason. I'd have more luck understanding Chinese.

Because they learned to use the computer before they learned to spell, most teenagers have never experienced life with out a computer or instant messaging or cell phones for that matter

You are right it's like a bad language. Teens want something of their own, something that they have created, and something that most parents won't be able to understand. And it's a fad, kids like creating something they think no one else has.
