no matter what it hurts! i would really rather use a tampon than anything else but i followed the steps and everything. once the tampon is in, how much space is there supposed to be between the tampon and the vagina opening?

You should push it in as far as possible. The upper 2/3 of the vagina does not have as many nerve endings as the lower 1/3, so you should not feel it when it is in. When you put it in, make sure you are relaxed. You might be tensing your muscles, making it seem like you have it all the way in, when it really isn't.

The tampon should be well inside the vagina - if you're young, still a virgin, small - then it might be that your hymen is in the way. Best thing to do is go to a doctor and have an internal exam and have her show you how to properly insert it. You don't want to irritate the delicate tissues there. Use a tampon with a plastic tube, lubricate it and try to relax when inserting it. It may be easier to do if you lie on your back - point the tampon torwards your spine. If you can still feel it try pushing it in further with your finger. If that doesn't work, remove it and try again. Don't try to do insert more than once or twice (opt for a pad that time around) or you could irritate the tissues.

It depends, you push it in as far as you can and that should be fine and unnoticable. You can't push it in too far so don't worry.
