My sister in law is so obnoxious, no matter what you say to her she has this hour long story about the same thing that happened to her blah blah blah. And the whole time somebody is talking to her she isn't even listening to you she is too busy formulating what she can say afterwards. What makes a person be like this??

This is a case of the "one-upper". Whatever you did, she did too, or better. I'm dealing with the same situation. And i agree with what was said above. Normally people who dont feel accepted or loved need to be the center of attention to prove how "great" they can be. My sister in law also happened to be an alcoholic, and the mix did nOT mix well. Loud wasnt the word. But we sat her down & explained to her that we weren't sure who "she" was because she was too busy trying to be someone else & that she doesnt need to agree with everything we say for us to accept her. Its worked so far, try talking to her

It sounds like she is excited to be part of the conversation and dying to be accepted. People tend to fill silence with speech because they are nervous and truly don't know what to say. Has she been welcomed into the family or kept at a distance? I'd be willing to bet that if she felt loved by all of the family, she wouldn't talk so much or be nearly as obnoxious.

I know somebody just like that-just kidding. She probably feels inferior to you and just wants you to validate her. It's low self esteem.
