In my experience hospital bills are horrible and unaccommodating regardless of what they claim. The payment "arrangements" I've witnessed have been as ridiculous as wanting you to put the bill on a credit card to which they'll debit a set amount each month, but if you reach your limit or your card is cut off, they'll debit the whole amount leaving you with a big bill--again. The bad part is most of the time, medical bills are even hard to get rid of with a bankruptcy- even under the old bankruptcy laws which were way easier. You couldn't get out of hospital bills any easier than student loans and IRS payments. Plus, they are QUICK to report to your credit file! I've heard it's sometimes best in the long run to try and find a loan to pay the medical bills and then repay the loan.---How much worse can medical expenses get?! I hope you have better luck than a lot of people I've seen!

RE No medical insurance?
I had pain in my lower right abdomen in january for 7 days. I went to the ER because I don't have medical insurance and someone told me they are good at working payment arrangments. I just got a bill for over 5 thousand dollars in the mail. I called and they said they would send me the paper work via mail to apply for payment arrangments, but I couldn't set it up over the phone. My question is, how good are hospitals (mine is in California) at working with people who don't have medical insurance and have a limited income? I am a full time graduate student so this may be difficult to pay back..

This may be the biggest scandal in America. The bill you saw for five thousand would be billed to insurance companies at as much as 50% less. This so called volume purchase is really they have the power to set rates but the hospital can screw the individual. Congress people this should be illegal. An x-ray for a sick individual should cost no more than for an insurance company. They are real good at working payment arrangements BUT DEMAND A REDUCTION IN BILLING or tell them you will not attempt payment and that as a student you are judgment proof. Also if you are sick and can wait a couple of hours go to an Urgent Care center not an Er, right there you could save $100s.

Mm good question-you should consider working directly with the Human Resources department of your hospital to explain your case in depth..they may be able to direct you to sources for funding or alternate payment plans that could be strung out over a certain time period if you will not be able to pay the full amount quickly...I know the struggle given that I am a college sophomore living out of state. ...it will work out fine.

Try to get them to reduce the bill. You may have to go to several people to get this done. They just throw out ridiculous charges as they know most people aren't going to pay anyway. They may work with you if they think you might actually pay them. If you were an illegal alien, you wouldn't have to pay anything.
