It will be a joint mission: USA, India, Great Britain, China, France, and Russia. Yes, the crew will survive the mission.

It will happen by 2030.

The best time for the first manned mission to Mars will be in 2014.

This is because the position of the planets will provide an escape route back to Earth in the event of an accident.

Because of an alignment of Earth, Mars and Venus, a so-called gravitational slingshot manoeuvre would take astronauts to Mars and, if needed, bring them home safely.

The emergency flight path would only be possible if the spacecraft was launched within a few days of 14 January 2014.

Orbital calculations show that no similar escape option exists for at least a decade before or after 2014. This means that astronauts might be forced to attempt a landing on Mars even if their spacecraft became crippled in an accident on the way to Mars.

This trajectory is remarkably fortuitous as it does not exist for many years prior to or after the 2014 date.

Who: An international team of at least 4 astronauts/cosmonauts

When: probably not until 2030 at the earliest, unless some breakthrough in propulsion is made in the next few years -- then it could be tried earlier.

Will they survive? Yes, the mission would not be undertook in the first place if the odds of survival were not very good (because of the way the space vehicles were built).

When they make the biosphere experiments a success, the Russians, who have experience with long-term space residence in space, will probably be a major part in an American program, because we've got the cash. But we need a major break through in propulsion to make it close to practical.
