Like a previous answer if you are using itunes ilike. com shows you a lot of free music relitive to what your are listening that is put up by artist for free legal download at gradgeband.com, although it would be nice if you helped out these independent artists. You could also try a internet radio station like pandora.com, I find it very good. Also if you are into podcasts (you do not need an apple itunes or an ipod, just an rss reader music player) you can get the cbc radio 3 podcast weekley - the best of independent canadian music! Host is Grant! it is Great! (ps. you can put it on ur ipod and everything)

Seriously you cant. All those programs that are legal cost money. Its illegal to download music for free unless its a promotion for that company. You should know this. If you want to be like the rest of us, download limewire!!!!

Many independent bands put their songs on their own web sites and those are free and legal. There are independent music sites like emusic.com that's legal as well. When bands can distribute their music directly to fans, that's what the big record labels should be afraid of.

Well, yes there is. You can move to a country where downloading anything is legal.
And just FYI none of the PROGRAMMES to download music are illegal to use...the act of downloading (well actually uploading) copyrighted material is what's illegal.

itunes does a free download of the week
and some bands release songs on the internet for free before they are officially released,
The Arctic Monkeys for example, released their songs to people on the internet for people to download for free before their album was released.

I don't know if its legal (no its not) but you can try lime-wire. I use it. There are others out there...I've tried them all, bear-share, kazza but for some reason you seem to get alot of corrupted files and virus warnings with those.
OK I suggested lime-wire..so then the answer to your question is NO you cannot download music for free legally anywhere on the net.

Yeah, It's called don't get caught or you screwed. They only target big downloaders like people who have downloaded like 100,000 songs into their shared folder which is the folder that speads the love.
