Depends on the computer you have as compared to the monitor you're planning on getting. Quickest and easiest thing I can tell you to do is take a look at how many pins your current monitor has as well as their configuration and get one with the same number of pins and configuration.

1. the connections have to match. If your video card is only DVI-I, it generally comes with a dongle to convert to standard VGA.
2. Monitor size could be a problem if you have a really cheap video card. If you have an old or cheap video card, I would stick to a 17" monitor and no higher because the video card may not be able to produce the higher resolution of the big monitor at 32bit colour.
3. The shape of the screen may not work well with an old video card if it's a widescreen monitor.

Look at the connector that your current monitor uses. You will need to purchase a monitor that has the same type of connector. (Usually a 15 pin VGA connector.) Beyond that, if the connector is the same, you can use any monitor.
