Can you have sex during the 7-day placebo week of a birth control packet or do you need a back method of birth control during this time, since you are only taking sugar pills and your period doesn't usually last 7 days.

It's not the bleeding that makes sex on the placebo week safe, it's the fact that your body won't have time to produce a mature egg, and that your endometrium wouldn't be able to support it anyway. Getting pregnant is surprisingly tricky with many things that can mess it up, and it's amazing it happens so readily for most people.

Sex on the placebo week is as safe as any other time of the month.

I can definetly help you with this question! I am on the same type of birth control pills (the ones that come with the 7 placebo pills for when you are supposed to have your period.) When i started the birth control pills 4 months ago, this was my main concern, if i was able to have sex during the 7 day placebo pill time. I was confused because those 7 pills have no hormones in them, so i didnt understand if they would prevent pregnancy at those times or not.

But the answer is YES, you can have sex during this time, and there is NO need for a back up method. This is because, by the time you get to the week of the placebo pills, your body still has enough hormones in it from the last 3 weeks of active pills to prevent pregnancy for the week of the placebo pills. Even if you dont start your period, or your period lasts shoter or longer than 7 days, you are still safe to have sex. Another thing my OB/GYN explained to me is that the period you have, acually isnt a 'real' period. Its just breakthrough bleeding, and there is no egg being released. Thus, no egg being released means no egg to fertilize and become pregnant.

I hope answer made sense. I didnt want to just give you a 'yes or no' answer, but i wanted to explain it as well. I remeber when i started the pill i asked the same question on here, and i understood the answer better when they explained it.

Just keep in mind, the only time you need to use another form of birth control is if you are taking antibotics or have diahrea.

What Are Placebo Pills

Of course, like you said the placebos are meant for the days you are soposed to have your cycle, and most don't menstrate for that long. Birth control takes an average of six months to completely leave your system, but they also say its not quite 100% effective either. Better safe than sorry so still practice other forms of protection. A.k.a. a condom!!!

What i have heard is that with most pills you are protected during this week, especially if you are on a regular type of pill. So it should be fine to use no protection.

You can without backup (provided you took the previous 3 weeks worth of pill consistently).

Yes, as long as you take the previous three weeks regularly as instructed then you are completely protected during that week.
