its really based on the current status of ur laptop...most laptop could just be updated to home basic without no change to the main hardwear but 2 get home permium u might need some changed to ram, graphics and sound. i hav a laptop and was plannin to update so i checked microsoft. i downloaded their system checker and it highlighted what version my laptop was compatiable with...u shoudl try that b4 plannin the next step...http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=42b5ac83-c24f-4863-a389-3ffc194924f8&displaylang=en

Go to Microsoft.com and Download the Vista compatability programme. This will search your Computer and suggest the best one for your machine based on software installed. I have been told however that Vista Home premium is the best version for most home use. Be warned though the Compatibility programme will tell you loads of programmes that have to be removed before installation. Like NERO 6 and Norton 2007. I belive some sites have produced patches but not all.

Buying M$ products as a standalone install, is an expensive way to get windows. You would be better sticking with what you have and getting Vista when you want to get a new laptop.

Consider that you can get a Vista Laptop for £350+. That's the hardware AND the OS.

Time will tell which is best but if you was going to spend that sort of money on the software wouldn't you be better off selling your current laptop and buying one with vista pre installed. You can get a dual core Acer from comet with vista premium for £500. Also irrespective of the ram issue you will need to check that your grapics card will be supportive of vista. Most laptops at bottom to mid range come with onboard Intel graphics. I rang Inel last week to check which is supportive of vista to run the aeros and they make only one that is recommended. Its the 950GMA. If you haven't got this you won't be ale to run aeros.

all depends on what you are using ur computer for. Premium is ideal as it allows the increased use of graphics etc. You've got to remember its a microsoft, its not likely to come down in price in the near future, if at all. My advice, unless you feel you need it, stick with xp, its not as pretty as vista, but most of the bugs have been sorted.

vista isnt for laptops in practicality although they want to sell it to everyone
you Really need 2gb memory, minimum 1gb but then itll run slow
at 512mb films dont play properly with it, theyre choppy
Also youll have trouble getting drivers, companies wont go out of their waay to make them for machines MS doesnt recommend you using it on
Premium is really only the addition of 64bit OS, you dont need it
Buy the oem delux if you insist
In my opinion, stay with XP until you get a new laptop
spend the money on new memory and make xp run better
there are webistes that can tell you how to change memory, just go to a search engine and type how do i change laptop memory
try askjeeves.com

1) Dell is crap
2) Vista is crap - it just looks good - I crashed 4 laptops with Vista Home Premium in ONE DAY!!

Just stick with Windows XP for now!

Microsoft will soon release patches for security flaws in Vista any day soon I bet ya!

i would say wait for the price to go down. premium is better than the basic version, as basic has cut out a lot of things that are "not needed"
