I would go for the cat. They are easy to look after, very clean and are quite intelligent. The fun you can have watching a kitten or cat play is amazing. You do not need to walk them or inflict their barking on your neighbours, they do not cost lots to keep and they will make short work of any mice that there may be about. They live longer on average than dogs too and they bury their poo in someone elses back yard ;o) so you wont have to.
Its also a delight watching them give birth to a litter and watching the kittens grow.... delightful...

I have a cat (stuff). I haven't had any problems with her at all. She's very independent & she's trained to go to the bathroom. She eats only twice a day and that makes it easier when buying food. Most people say cat's are not loving, but my cat is. She always goes wherever I go. She kinda takes care of me too. She's very cute and I can even play with her! She sheds a lot yeah but so do dogs. Just make sure you're not allergic to cats, otherwise it will be a bad choice. Other than that, I think my mom couldn't have chose any better than my kitty.

A cat is very low maintenance. You can be gone a few days and they will survive. On the other hand a dog is like a newborn, they need to be taken care of always. You always need to take the dog out to go potty where a cat uses a litter box. If you are a clean person a cat wont stink up your house, but if you don't clean up you might smell like a cat. Also if you get a male cat you should get it neutered because they spay a horrible scent when they are in heat that you will never get rid off. Good luck!

Cats are quieter, eat less (usually) are soft, and will go in a litter box. Dogs are great companions, they love you when no one else does, they listen to all of your woes and worries and don't talk back. They're always happy to see you come home. Cats could really care less most of the time, but do like to snuggle and give kisses (so do dogs). You can take your dog out for a walk and be more social with them and teach them tricks. Dogs require more attention and care than cats. I think it depends on how much time you have to devote to your new pet and how much time your Mum will have to give. If she ends up taking care of it, it will cause you grief. Both are great to have, have fun with whatever you decide to get.

I have four dogs and two cats. Dogs require more care then cats who have a more independant attitude. Dogs need to be walked, let outside to go to the bathroom, bathed, brushed, etc. You could say they are high maintenance. Cats are more aloof, they allow you to pet them when they think it is ok. Dogs are great to go for walks with to play with outside and wrestle with. They sleep on the foot of the bed and they are always glad to see you and make this known. They are more outgoing and if I could only have one pet it would be a dog. I love both a lot but dogs are nicer for a child to have a companion with.

Cats have different personalities from each other just a dogs have different personalities. If you want a pet to play fetch most cats don't but some do. If you want a pet to pee itself every time you walk in a door - don't get a cat.
With cats you'll have to learn to read them, their body language is different than ours. For example, they narrow their eyes when they see something they like - we narrow our eyes when we see something we don't like. That's why cats jump into the laps of people who don't like them.
Although cats do have (as a general rule) more independent natures, they need just as much tending and training as dogs.
Why not go onto AKC.org and take some tests for each species before making your decision. It really can help.
It's unfortunate your mother won't let you have one of each.

ok dogs are good are protection source plus there good friends a cat is good too because they keep the house mouse free the problems are that cats are easy to train and dogs are not in my opinion cats leave scratches on the walls and scrape them plus they ruin your furniture dogs if they find a spot in the house that they like to do use the bathroom they WILL keep on using that same spot and it WILL stink especially if you have rug then it will get bugs such as worms under the rug if usedd for a long time and cats vomit and leave hair balls plus dogs give bad smells in winter if ttheir big and you cant bath them or theyll freeze so you should chose the cat its way easier.

I would pick a dog, definitely. I just think dogs are better.but i think that it depends on your lifestyle and personality. cats are more for people who would rather lounge around at home. Dogs are for more active and energetic. you wouldn't want to fool around with a cat the way that you would with a dog, if you do you will get a scratch in the face. As you can see everybody has their own prefrence.

Dogs are a lot of fun. You can take them out and they love to run and play. But they also require a lot of work. You gotta take them out to go to the bathroom. They need lots of exercise. Cats on the other hand, they are fun to play with, but they usually run around the house exercise themselves. And it is nice not having to take them out because they use a litter box. I guess it depends on what you want. Do you want an animal to love up on you and wanted to be petted all the time(cat) or do you want an animal you can take out and run and play with? (dog)

Go to the animal shelter and spend some time with both cats and dogs. Get to know about both types of animals.
Cats are independent and won't usually come if you call them. They will use a litter pan, so you don't have to go out in the cold or downpour to walk them, but who's going to clean it daily. You can leave them for a weekend and not have to worry, just put out enought food, water and a clean litter pan and their good to go. The vet bills are usually lower )shots, fixing, etc.). They will curl up on your lap and purr, well most of them will. The food can cost more pound for pound however. There's the expense of buying litter. Most don't like to wear sweaters, so forget dressing them up. I have 14 cats.
Dogs need to be walked several times a day whether your sick, it's cold or raining. They make loyal pets and can be great guards for the home. You can train them to play fetch and other games. They are great companions. Small and medium dogs can be dressed up for inclimate weather. If you go away, you must either take them with you, find someone to care for them or board them. You must clean up the yard from their poo. There's the worry of them biting someone, even the best behaved dog can bite. Your parents home insurance can go up depending on the breed of dog choosen. Some dogs are barkers too and this will annoy some neighbors. Different breeds and cross breeds have specific medical problems that can occur. Large dogs can get bloat (twisting of the bowels), hip dysplasia and other joint related problems. Small dogs are suseptable to their elbows dislocating. Medium dogs can hve a combination of both. Don't forget small and medium dogs are best for small homes, large dogs need a large yard and lots of room indoors. We have 3 dogs in our home, one of each size.
My German Shepherd had severe hip dysplasia and had to be put down, I couldn't afford the $3000 to fix it, plus she was attempting to bite everyone not in our home. I also had a small mix breed and she had both elbows dislocating, we gave her to the local shelter and she was adopted out before we left. We had the chance to explain all about her to the new owner, who could afford to do her surgery. I found myself in a divorce and lost over half my families income. I didn' t have the funds at the time or they both would have had their surgeries.
Write a pro's and con's list for both cats and dogs, then visit the shelter again and see which animal fits you best. Then you'll forget the lists, because you'll pick the one that pulls at your heart and get that one.
I have both as you can see. I wouldn't trade any of them for anything. I love the different personalities of both types.
