Ok i really like this guy but we are not dating. he likes books, coffee, and cars. but i am very clueless what to get him. i don't want it to seem to mushy. just a good plain gift for a guy who you like alot.

how about inviting him to have some coffee (starbucks or something)
Or get him a card and candy to start off simple.

You can ask him if he will like to accompany you to the library or to Chapters; afterwards treat him with some coffee at Starbucks or Seattle Best or some good coffee place. Second option is to get him a gift certificate from some good coffee place.

Could you find a book reading in your area, and write the details down in a plain card? On the date, take him and have a good time, and go out for coffee...
Not mush, shows you like him and are considerate of his hobbies, and you get to spend some good time with him.
