I brought My Rover 100 Knightsbridge (P reg) for my 1st car. It only cost me £120. It was holding back but it had not been driven for 18 months. When i got it home and put water in we noticed that there was mayonnaise type gunge in the water, we drove it to a garage and when we removed the water cap again the water was full of dark brown liquid. Ive been told that this is a blown head gasket.
How much would this cost to fix and is it worth fixing on a car that i only paid £120 for? Ive been told that this keeps happening on these cars and they cant guarantee that it will work when its done and that i should just either:
a) drive it until the engine goes or
b) scrap the car.
Does anyone think that its worth getting fixed?

It will cost you around 500 quis to get it sorted and the Cylinder head will have to be skimmed before it is refitted. The oil and water circuit will need to be flushed and replenished and while your at it you may as well fit a new timing belt and tensioner. Rover K series engines will run for ever if they are looked after. But flog the guts out of them when they are cold and it can be costly. My L reg 214 is in Great condition body and chassis wise and although its on its second engine its a good runner. The only reason its on its second is the last onehad to be skimmed twice till there was no tolerance left on the head, so i replaced the whole lump. Oh and dont over mix the antifreeze cos if its a certain type it can rot your ally head. If you have a soft spot for it like i do with mine go ahead and get it sorted, but if not the 500 or so quid your about to spend could be a deposit for a new one

First of all, look at the bigger picture. What condition is the body in? Will the car easily pass an Mot? If not scrap it. If it's all ok then then value of the car is what it's worth to you. You'll never make money on it now. Have fun.

You could keep driving it until it blows up altogether, but it might do that in a very awkward spot and be a bu**er to recover. If you have the time, space & inclination it might be worth trying to break it for parts, but otherwise don't throw good money after bad. Just scrap it.

hi,my advice is just to drive the car until it lets you down, the gunge you see is oil contamination, you never know if you are a low mileage user the car may last longer than you think,it may also pay to remove the expansion bottle and clean, then flush the cooling system and refill with new coolant and water, then just monitor the oil in the coolant and see how quickly it reappears.
