my six week old son rarely smiles. I play with him and talk to him all the time. Is he just grumpy or still trying to get used to the whole smile thing? What are some good play ideas to do with a child of this age?

This young is all about exploring their world. It is all new and nothing is a given. They are getting to know people by voice, touch and smell. The smiling is usually gas at this age, don't worry. It will come. Just massage and spend time rocking and talking to him. He will be more attuned at about 3 mos. old and on from there. Right now it's all like you or I being put on Mars. Right? It'll take a whils. When he knows who does what for him he will begin to communicate and there will be times you will wish he couldn't lol. Good luck and have fun. no stressing just enjoy...sounds like a good baby to me.

It takes a lot to get a 6 week old to smile. They are just learning how so don't expect him to be smiling all the time. As the weeks go by, you'll be getting him to smile much easier. By about 8-9 weeks is when my son errupted in the smiling and by 3 months I couldn't look at him in the middle of the night feedings or else we were up forever with cooing and laughing since he was very generous with those gummy grins. Don't worry, your baby is developing fine and just give him some more time to develop.

Most babies are not grumpy unless they are uncomfortable, hungry or perhaps their teeth are coming in.
It does take a couple of weeks for a newborn to smile when you smile, it may even take a couple months. But as long as the parents are happy and always smiling they babies will emulate them.
My baby is 8 months old now and she didnt' smile at first, but now we can't stop her from smiling.

He just in the beginning stages of smiling. Its still more of a reflex and imitation than an actual expression of joy. Work on eye tracking with him by getting him to focus on an object, then moving it slowly from side to side so he can follow it with his eyes.
