Liberal presidents --
FDR -- New Deal
LBJ -- the "Great Society" (even more liberal!)
Thomas Jefferson (in the now conservative "states rights" way, but also in the more populist, anti-establishment, anti-old money way).

Difficult elections --
Have to say 2000, where less than 2000 votes determined the presidency.

What about the Jefferson / Adams election of 1796, which caused the 12th Amendment to be ratified (because electors just cast two ballots, and the person with the most votes got to be president and second most to be VP)

What about JBL / Goldwater -- with the famous serious ads about the communists taking over or nuclear war -- great "daisy" ad with the tagline for LBJ -- "The stakes are too high for you to stay home."

FDR was liberal for his day (not by today's standards, though). Carter was the most liberal (ergo, the worst)...

2000 election was bad, but so was the Kennedy / Nixon election, which was lost by approximately the same number of votes as there were dead democrats on the voting rolls in Chicago. However, unlike Gore, Nixon had the class to concede the election and NOT put the country through turmoil.

There is nothing controversial in elections. They have clear set rules. There are people who don't like the outcome of elections so they call it controversial but they don't seem to understand the concept of democracy and that more people picked the other guy over their candidate. They tend to not accept fair elections and just ***** and ***** for ever and not provide anything positive to our world.

Your question is convoluted but I'll tell you that Carter was the worst president ever next to Harding and he(Carter) was an ultra liberal. Most controversial is Lincoln/Douglas, that was some hairy stuff.
