Oh dear if you have to ask this, I think you'll be doing a lot of them. ;) Only joking a re-sit is where you re-take an examination. Usually during the sumer holidays between years.

A re-sit is being given another attempt to pass an examination you have previously failed.

You need to ask your tutor what is required of you. You also need to look in the university's regulations.

You may get a 'capped mark' for any resit examinations you sit. That means that you can only get a certain grade no matter how well you perform. This is to ensure that students do not 'strategically fail' courses to give themselves more time to study thereby getting an unfair advantage over students who passed first time. Again you need to look in the university's regulations.

re- sits is when for example you have failed a module and thus you didn't pass it because you didn't obtain a mark of 40% minimum or more, due to one of your assessments which you didn't do or whatever reasons it may be. you have to hand the essay or whatever it is in still, but the university has given you another opportunity to re-sit the 'failed' module. although you will be capped at 40% and usually, you would NOT have to pay for this
re-takes is when you have to re-take the module that you have failed and regardless of whether it is a semster 1 or 2 module. there is also a chance that you are also liable to pay a small fee for this as well

Each university has its own regulations.... Contact your student advice centre for more details..

But in general...

They are a headache - don't bother, just do your best in the 1st place!

All depends why you are re-taking, and your actual grade. A pass mark is usually 40% and if your module grade was below this, you will be asked to retake an exam in August. To get through to the next year.

Yes a re-sit is whereby you have to retake the entire module again. However there is a tendency for universitites to cap your your grades at the pass mark (which is usually 40%) regardless of what marks you achieve.

Another kind of re-sit is whereby you only re-sit one part of the assessment (the one you failed). If it is the exam you failed you just re-sit the exam at the next opportunity. If it is the coursework that you failed you are usually given an alterntive assignment to do.

Different uni's have different rules regarding re-sits so I suggest you go speak to your personal tutor. Or read the handbook that you would have been given at the start of the course.
