If you are printing a large volume of paper laser will give you the lower total cost of ownership (TCO) and faster printing speeds. It will however have a higher initial investment cost, and color lasers are significantly more expensive then color inkjets.

Here is a quick example. Lets say you print 1,000 pages per month. And lets also assume for the sake of example that you only print black and white. Also for the sake of example we'll assume that printers don't come with ink because they often come with trial size ink that doesn't print as much as a full retail ink cartridge. Lets see how much you'd spend in a year.

A decent inkjet (desket) printer will cost you ~ $150 dollars.
B+W refills will cost you ~$25 /each, but will only last for ~500 pages. So you buy two ink carts/month at a cost of $50 month.
So at the end of the year you spend $50*12= $600+ $150= $750 for the year, but you only had to pay $150 initially. At that level of usage the printer will probably last you at most three years.

A decent laser printer might cost you $300 dollars. The toner cartridges will cost you $125 each but will last for ~5,000 pages. so in a year you spend $300 + ($125 *2) + ($125 * .4) = $685. (the .4 comes from the fact that you'll still have 3,000 pages on the third toner cart that you haven't used yet. The laser printer will probably last 10 years or more.

The laser printer saves you $65 in the first year and gives you much faster printing performance. After the first year the savings become even greater since the cost of ink per page on the inkjet is 5 cents per page, and the cost of ink on the laser is 2.5 cents per page and until the end of the third year when the inkjet will probably break you are only buying ink every year. Well the numbers I used aren't from any particular product they reflect the general state of the various technologies.

If you want specific specs and TCO/ cost per page numbers you should try cnet reviews. http://reviews.cnet.com/Printers/2001-3155_7-0.html?tag=ont.prt is a good start.

I would say that both are costly, but printing with a laserjet is cheaper in the long run. But that is only if you are planning on using it strictly for text and no color.

A color laser printer is going to have a higher initial cost than ink. But the toner will be cheaper per page.

Laser printer either Black n white or colour is much cheeper than any desk jet .
The toner can be refilled about 20-25 times and prints approx 2000 pages with images . While a deskjet printing loses it's quality on refilling .
The laser prints much faster than deskjet with much more quality
the initial cost of laser is higher but you feel lucky on desiding to buy it .

if your usage is for black prints is only then go for laserjet because they are cheaper and toner can be refilled once or twice and it lasts till 3000 prints. i think you should go in for HP laserjet 1020
