Well, if you're going to be moving the computer around a lot, I suggest getting first a wireless network set up. You can do this from an ISP (internet service provider) like Verizon. They'll bring a wireless router. After that, you'll need a wireless receiver of some sort (I believe they use card types in laptops) which will be able to receive the wireless signal from the router. After that, you're good to go. However, if your laptop is going to be stationary, then I suggest getting a simple ethernet cable and hooking it up to the router.

The laptop must have either a modem or a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet Card.
You must have either an analog or DSL phone line.
You must have appropriate cable to connect your laptop to the phone line via modem or DSL Router.
You must have an ISP (Internet Service Provider - depends on the country, the phone company usually is an ISP nowadays)

A Wi.fi connection, if your laptop has the wireless card.
A traditional modem with a phone line.
A lan cable to plug into your laptop.
It's easy. You're online!

either use a dialup connection or wireless card connection or your new laptop should have an ethernet adapter built into it already. all you need is a modem to connect to cable or dsl.

first an internet service provider cable for high speed broad band, DSL for broad band, or dial up.
confirm if your laptop has a wireless card, a built in ethernet card or built in dial up modem. most laptops have slots for PC cards so you can purchase a pc slot ethernet card, dial modem, or wireless.

If you don't have a built in adaptor, you can buy an external wireless card or USB to connect to internet.
