I'm 8 1/2 months pregnant and I've been told that standing on my head while balancing phone books on my elbows will help me break my water! I've TRIED standing on my head while balancing phone books on my elbows and I've even tried doing cartwheels on the stairwell, but nothing seems to work! HELP!
Is this just ANOTHER OLD WIVES' TALE?

With my first child back in '98 I would not go into labor for anything! We tried everything -sex, running, you name it....Believe me NOTHING works unless that baby is ready to come. I would up having to be induced at 44 weeks (yes, I was 24 days past my due date, and still did not dialate - I had to have a C-section to get him here.) I just had my 4th C Section, and my Dr told me that after 4 child I still have never dialated....

Why try rush it gee are you crazy woman let nature do its think before you injure your self or the baby you not even supposed to lift your hands above your head cos you can tangle the babies cord around its neck and your moving the baby around by doing cartwheels and balancing on your head its so bad for the child it wont even be in its place by the time you need to give birth and you will have complications yes that's old wives tales and your harming yourself and most important of all your baby and just to set the record straight a pregnancy is actually 10 months long (40 weeks) but its safe to have your baby at 9 months your causing big problems and where ever you heard this from Id suggest you stop reading it or listening to that person its just crazy cant believe you'd even believe it really well good luck though anyway and please just relax like a normal person and wait the baby will come when its time :)

I'm not sure why you would want to break your water at 8 and a half months pregnant, but standing on your head is probably not going to do anything other than put you at risk of injuring yourself or your baby.
Yes it's an old wive's tale.
Remember that pregnancy is 40 weeks. I know at the end it can be a bit miserable, but you owe it to your baby to keep him/her in there as long as you can to avoid complications with immature lungs and immune system.
A better way to prepare for labor and birth would be to walk or even swim if you can. Gravity works with you when you're walking and swimming is a great way to relieve the pressure on your back and legs. Both can help move the baby into a good position in preparation for birth. Read up on ways you can prepare for labor...I assure you standing on your head isn't in there. Good luck.

I just had my 2nd child 6 weeks ago. I deliverd 1 day b/4 my due date. With my 1st my water unexpecidly at 11 days b/4 my due date. You can imagine how miserble I was, considering I was expecting the 2nd one to go early too. However, my Dr told me that the 2nd one usually stays in longer. I was huge. 50 inches around even though I only gained 35 pounds , 10 less from the 1st time. I walked and walked and walked so much that I lost 4 pounds in one week. My husband and I had sex through out my pregnancy and it did get harder, but at the end we made it work, hoping to help thin my cervix and to start things. Didn't happen. I read in one of the parenting magazines that women who activly have sex tend to carry longer than those who don't. Go figure right. lol The castor oil will make you vomit which can cause contractions to start, or it will make you poop which is the same type of pushing you do in labor and could help pull the baby down. My Dr told me not to rush. Easy for him to say he's never been pregnant. But he was right. The baby will come when it's time. I know this is hard to hear and doesn't help you being miserable. If you have the energy you should walk and walk at a slightly faster pace than normal. My husband and I did 10 laps around Target in 15 minutes. My mother in law walked me around the mall 2 times and my mother walked me all over town. And still it was 1 day b/4 my due date that I went into labor. Be patient and enjoy your alone time and time with your husband. Good luck and God bless your saftey and health

Why would you try anything to make it happen faster? If you baby is ready to come out, it will. Besides, I know 9 months is a long time when your pregnant but a year from now you will be looking back at how fast time went.

Be patient. I don't think any of that nonsense works.

it will not hurt your baby. It's not like it's constantly loud like that around the baby all the time. The doctor will tell you an occasional concert will not hurt your baby. Go to the imax, have a good time and don't worry.

Don't try dangerous stuff! You may hurt yourself or your baby. The baby will come when it's ready and you might have an easier delivery too. If your water breaks but you don't have contractions, they'll probably induce you and I assure you, pains are much worse than those coming with a normal delivery.

wow...how do you stand on your head while you're pregnant? that amazes me. i always heard that sex helps move labor along better. and a lot of walking. also you can schedule to be induced and have them break your water. good luck and i hope you have a healthy baby!

Why would you wan't your water to break at 81/2 months? When the baby is ready to come out he/she will come out, if your doctor feels you need to deliver he/she will talk to you about it. Let it happen naturally.
