I think a lot of people claim it, but don't really understand or are not Irish enough. I'm 1/2, I know my ancestry are from Ireland, I have traced my family tree. I know dates and places from which they came. I'm sure some who throw around their "Irishness" can't and don't have that type of info.
As for a horn dog, I don't know what that is? You said something about being Catholic. That's a big part of being Irish, so I won't mock someone's history.

I don't have a hint of Irish in me, all German. However my husband is of Irish descent and he's definitely a horndog. And neither one of us is Catholic.

Nial of the Nine Hostages was a major horndog...and like many conquering madmen with swords, he spread his seed around.
Thus, the widespread Irish ancestry. Nothing to do with the Catholic church...really...nothing at all...

Is that only on St Patty's day? Where did you get 80%??? That sounds a little high. I'm Scottish and I believe a lot of people are Scottish and mistakenly think they are Irish.

I wouldn't have thought it was as high a percentage as that. After all America is founded from many races, Irish being only one of them. You have people originating from most African countries, Great Britain, Germany, Poland, France, the Low Countries, Austria, Switzerland, Scandinavia, Hungary, Greece, many middle eastern countries, China, Japan, Mexico, Central America, Canada and just about everywhere else in the world. Much of America is Protestant, Jewish, Confucian, Islamic, Amish, Methodist, Calvinistic, Mormon, Wesleyan and probably Satanist as well.
Given all that I would bet that in many parts of your country you would find it hard to find either a catholic or an Irishman.

That is not even remotely close to the truth. Where did you hear that? Germans are way more prevalent than Irish.
