Remorse, Remorse, Remorse.....convince the District Attorney that you, out of desperation lost sight of your moral and ethical ideals and committed this crime. If you are in fact crime free in the past, the Courts will work with you, Council you, put you on Probation, require Restitution and wait to see if you can regain Civic Credibility and Responsibility. If you Have a past record...anything goes.

Talk to your lawyer. First offense and if thats what actually happened the DA will be more forgiving. You can strike a plea and have to pay the money back, do community service, apologize to the people you hurt, and spend sometime visiting with a probation officer a few times a month for a few yrs.

First of all, if you have not spoken to the police yet, don't, and if you have already spoken to them, don't speak to them again. It sounds like you probably will not be able to hire an attorney. Therefore, you have to wait until the court appoints a public defender for you.
The public defender will assess whether you have any defenses, and whether the prosecution would have trouble in proving its case against you. You can discuss with your public defender whether it might be in your best interests to take the matter to trial. If you and the public defender decide instead that it is in your best interests to try plea negotation, then he or she can discuss whether the charge can be reduced.
What you can do to help yourself right now, if you are not in custody, is to continue to work at your job, and try to make yourself look like a model citizen.
If you have a chemical dependency problem, start addressing it. If you have medical insurance that will cover it, start treatment. If you don't have medical insurance, start going to NA or AA, try to get a sponsor, and have the sponsor come to court with you.
If you have a relationship with a member of the clergy, talk to him or her about your problem, and see if he or she will come to court with you.
Be on time for court. Dress appropriately. Do not bring small children with you. Be respectful to the judge. Be gracious to the public defender. He or she is overworked and underpaid. Good luck.
