First of all...Ortiz is a DH most the time, is a poor fielder when he does play and only bats the other times. As for Jeter, without Jeter the Yankees still have a great team, but without a guy like Mauer or Morneu the Twins are last place. MVP stands for Most Valuable Player not best hitter or Greatest Numbers. Jeter gets numbers because he bats behind guys always on base.

MVP as far as I know means Most Valuable Player. Now how can you give a guy an MVP award (unless it means something different) when 3 or 4 guys on the roster are driving in 100 runs. Jeter is great, Papi is clutch, Mauer and Morneau split votes, but Vlad is guy who should win. Can anyone name an outstanding player on the Angels roster other than Vlad Guerrero? Baseball is totally biased to the east coast especially NY and Boston, remember they bring in the money. And MLB and Bud Selig care more about money than anything, even the fans. I love baseball, but this and many other reasons are why I've lost respect for the game.

They get to be candidates every year because of a couple reasons. First, they can flat out HIT. And Jeter remains a spectacular fielder. They're also the two best clutch hitters in baseball. Ortiz has 9 walk off homers- 3 short of Jimmie Foxx, MLB leader, in less than half the # of at bats. Jeter is the glue that holds the Yankees together, a true team leader. Also, it's easy to take digs at Ortiz for not fielding- but he's not really that bad at it. If he was in the NL, you had better believe any team but the Cardinals would be happy to have him at 1B.

Mauer and Morneau are solid, but firstly they're splitting the burden. You can't have two season MVPs. Besides, honestly the most valuable guy on the Twins has been Santana. Also, to really get the MVP, you need to get it done for a few years in a row. Look at Pujols- he had to wait for the MVP, and I'd take him over any player in the league.

I am a long time Yankee Fan and i can say that jeter is the greatest yankee in my time (fan since 1985). he comes through in big spots whether it be offense or defense. The guy is a leader like no other and - he puts up very consistant numbers.

Being a Yankee fan I know something else, Ortiz can crush balls like very few and seems to only do so in tight situations to win or tie a ball game

To further answer your question, besides for the 2006 season where Jeter was awesome, he has not been a candidate in a long time. Ortiz has been a serious candidate in the past few years and rightfully so - but his DH status hurts him.

Lastly without Jeter and Ortiz, the Yanks and Sox are Much worse. You can see this when they are not in the lineup.

Jeter has never really been considered before last year, Ortiz is always in the mix because of his offensive numbers. I do agree that you should have to be playing the field to be voted MVP. The reason you will always have a Yankee and Red Sox player in the mix is because the media portrays them as the 2 best teams in the league. And many people just vote the best player on the best team for MVP, which I think is stupid. And besides that the Sox didn't even make the playoffs last year and the Yankees lost in the first round.

They are candidates because they are high profile players playing in the two biggest markets. But they are also good players and both show up in clutch situations. And voters will tend to look at winners generally (although A-Rod was an exception). Whether it is right or not, a player who single-handedly wins games for a first place team is valued higher by voters than someone who is responsible for the same amount of victories for a last place team. But I agree that Ortiz should not win as a DH unless he has a record breaking season, and I am glad my Twins got some love over those Yankees.

reason why is they always come through in the clutch Big Papi in the past 5 years has had like 40 walk off HR's, and Jeter has always been a leader and a heart and soul of the yankees team, I hate the yankees more than any team in all of pro sports, if u count college there right behind the Ohio State Fu(keyes, but Jeter always make clutch hits and clutch defensive plays like the 1 when he got jeremy giambi out at home in ALCS, and diving in the stands to catch a fly ball vs the red sox and almost cracked his head open, but wasn't afraid and made an amazing play, and he does everything offensively and defensively, but ortiz is MVP candidate every year cause he puts up Pujols type #'s on offense, and is a clutch hitter, and MVP always goes to a guy on a winning team, cause that's y they r valuable is cause they lead there team to win games and to be contenders which makes em valuable

Becasaue they are both great players. It is hard to name any one on the Yankees as a truely Valuable player, because of the fact that they have so many all-stars. If one goes down, they can buy another (Abreau for Sheffield). But Jeter has always been a class act, hard nosed player with great numbers. Ortiz...well, he is just HUGE offensively. Without his big bat and clutch hitting Boston is not as strong a team. He really is valuable to that club, THAT's why he is always in the mix. He won't ever win it because of the fact he is only a Dh.

It seems like you are a Twinky fan. Anyway, both (Ortíz and Jeter) are the souls of their respective teams. Without Ortíz, everyone wil walk Manny and the Sox will be a lot less powerfull. Jeter is the soul of the Yanks. Even with all the injuries from last year, Jeter gave a 100% in every game, he has those intangibles that made him a champ 4 times! and his numbers are not only average (a la Mauer). He hits for power, in clutch situations and support the pressure of a big market team.

the base line is this: this question wasn't "Who ought to win the MVP" It grow to be "What do you imagine of what Ortiz suggested?" i imagine it shows a egocentric aspect of David Ortiz that we've not in any respect fairly seen in the previous. Why does he even CARE about MVP after what his crew's been through this 3 hundred and sixty 5 days? he's were given a teammate on the DL with maximum cancers... and he's arguing over who ought to win a trophy? It also shows that Ortiz has a very constrained expertise of the historic previous of the game. because as an get mutually... Phil Rizzuto gained the MVP in 1950... with 7 homers and sixty six RBIs. In 1965 a guy named Zoilo Versalles gained it with 19 homers and seventy seven RBIs. throughout the time of Ichiro's 2001 MVP 3 hundred and sixty 5 days, he had 8 homers and sixty 9 RBIs. And who's to assert what number runs Jeter would have pushed in if he batted 3 or 4 in the lineup. comparing the run-generating ability of a 2 hitter... to a three or 4 hitter is basically moronic. Its like comparing a starter to a closer. The question concerning MVP is this.... How a lot would crew x be impacted through the shortcoming of participant X. What would take position to the Yankees without Derek Jeter? would they be 10 a million/2 up in the AL East? I doubt that heavily. What would take position to the pink Sox without David Ortiz? nonetheless, the position are they WITH him? Thats why dropping communities hardly ever produce MVPs... because once you're undesirable, it would not fairly count number how a lot worse you're without a guy. ought to the White Sox win without Jermaine Dye hitting 40 homers and driving in 100 and twenty? i imagine so. They gained the international sequence very last 3 hundred and sixty 5 days at the same time as he in trouble-free terms hit .274 with 31 homers and 86 RBIs. ought to the Twins win without Morneau? properly.. that relies upon on no matter if Santana or Liriano is pitching. they could't win (statistically talking) till Santana or Liriano are on the hill. in case you need to split the MVP between Santana and Liriano, they ought to win it. besides the undeniable fact that you are able to not, and each and each and every is of very similar cost to the crew. Jeter receives it this 3 hundred and sixty 5 days for lack of a more beneficial advantageous candidate... and considering the writers are going to prefer to furnish it to him... out of appreciate for his body of work. There would not in any respect be a three hundred and sixty 5 days as perfect as this one for a non-slugger to win it.
