With the on going debate over stem cell research I have yet to see a public opinion poll on the issue. Put politics aside when answering this question and answer from your heart. Look at the question from this angle, If you or someone in your family could be saved from this research.

My opinion on stem cell research:

The embryos these cells are being taken from would otherwise be destroyed - not buried, not treated with human diginty and respect, but burned like any other medical waste. They are not embryos that will ever become viable babies.

So why not use them to help others? Why waste the possibility that cures for awful diseases lie in their cells simply because they might, one day, have become human if the people they belong to had decided to implant them into a uterus instead of having a medical lab burn them up?

Since you're a realist, not a politico, then let's look at the reality. It's very simple - all progress made to date with regards to stem cell research has come from adult stem cells. Not embyonic stem cells. If we do not have to use embyonic cells to make progress, and it is a moral and political problem in the country, then don't use them. All the results are coming from somewhere else anyway.

Embryonic stem cells also form into tumors regularly when tested.

I would gladly donate stem cells from my baby's umbilical cord or the placenta. But is it right to cut up a fetus, even if it was an unintended pregnancy? In my opinion, no. But that's just it..it's my opinion. However, I think if people want to research this, it should not be funded by the government, (NJ just approved $300 Million for the construction of a stem-cell lab, even though we have the highest taxes & are deeply in debt) it should be funded by private companies or by other means. I refuse most medical treatments (vaccines, certain medications, etc) that are out now, I doubt I would ever consider this.

There are different stem cell research fields. EMbrionic stem cell has been going on for some time now, and has yet to submit a viable result that leads to treatment. Umbylical and embrionic stem cell research has yielded results, with over 100 successful treatments developed so far.

So, do you bet on the horse that has not one single race, or do you put your money on the horse that has won 100 races.....and the odds pay out at the same?

I agree for many reasons...

1. They have developed ways to do it without using babies. Which is a good thing for those people who don't support that.

2. The potential is awesome. It could really help so many people if they can really do the things they think they can do. And the only way to find out is to do the research.

3. Even if they uses aborted babies......why not.....all that is going to happen to them is they are going to be destroyed. Why not take some good from them.....we allow partents to donated their childs organs, why not. I am not for abortion, but it is legal no matter how much I disagree with it....why not allow for some good to come from it. I don't think it will make abortion easier for people, or make them feel better about it if that is a decision they make. Let some good come from and bad situation.

And I know that more progress has been made with adult cells so that should be the first option.....

There is no ethical issue here. Stem cell research will stop embryos from being thrown into the trash can.

Fertility clinics make dozens of embryos with intent of destroying them once one or two children are created. Stem cell research is an alternative option to throwing the embryos into a garbage can as they are today.

The opposition is just being spiteful that they can't stop fertility clinics from creating dozens of embryos that will be destroyed later.

I think there is a lot of misinformation about it. For example, many believe that stem cell research has something to do with abortion, when there is in no way abortion involved in any of the processes. Also, many people think the government isn't banning the research, when in fact there is a restriction on new embryonic strains that can be used. I think this has the possibility to be a major advancement in science, and we are slowing it down.

100% absolutely for it. We should be sticking the 3 billion dollars a week that we are spending on the Iraq war and using it for stem cell research.

I defer my opinion to medical journals. There ave been absolutely NO medical break trough's using embryonic stem cells -- none! On the other hand, there has been a lot of progress made utilizing adult stem cells.

No one has any problem with adult stem cell research. And that is where the most promise has been shown.
