I am wondering this because I have heard that long term use of the pill can sometimes alter the chemicals in your body and cause infertility or sterility. I know that when your on the pill, the hormones in the pill keep you from ovulating so you dont get pregnant. One of my nursing instructors was saying that long term use could cause this to happen indefinitely. I am worried because I have been on the pill for 6 years and I am getting married soon and would like to have children in a few years. Has anyone ever heard of this happening to someone they know that used the pill for a long time? Should I stop taking the pill and use something else?

Everybody is different. My friend was on the pill for 14 years.
She decided that she wanted to have children and got off the pill in February of last year. And you know what ? She got pregnant almost immediately. As a matter of fact her baby was born Jan 17 of this year.
Mind you her boyfried says she got pregnant right away because he's a real man ! LOL
Speak to your doctor regarding your concerns, but everybody is
different as you can see.

Birth control works by putting hormones into your body that you produce while you are pregnant so that your body thinks it is pregnant and does not release an egg. You can't get pregnant if there is no egg to be fertilized. So, it's like you've been pregnant to the last 10 years. Your body can take some time to get used to running the old way again. Since many women's cycles are extremely irregular, it's no big deal if yours are, too. I'm wondering, though, if you were on the pill, didn't you have your periods in the off week every month?

I don't know where that person got that, but they must be really old. For when you decide to get pregnant you are supposed to stop taking the pill and after one month your body should return to normal. For more information there should be a website on your particular pill package insert, look that up on the net or look up the name of the type of pills on webmb.com
there is also Ask.com or just Google it where you can find out anything you want to know. I hope this put's your mind at ease. And as a person who is dealing with infertility (not because of birth control pills) make sure that you do a gynocology work up when you do decide to get pregnant. Just so that you don't wast a year trying if there is something wrong. Dr's won't see you till you've tried for a year.

Technically, it should not keep you from ever having children, however, many women report having trouble getting pregnant for several years after stopping the pill. Normally, though, I only hear those reports for the first 2 years after stopping the pill.
Overall, I would say don't worry about it. Just stop taking the pill as soon as you and your husband think you want to have children, and remember, there is a slight possibility that is could take couple years to get pregnant. Also, if you don't want to use BC, you can always use condoms....and remember, adopting a child is always an option. There are so many children out there without parents to love them.

My aunt used the pill for 4 years and the shot for 2. Now she doesnt have a period ever and the chances of her getting pregnant are very slim because of how her body now ovulates. never. The only answer sh ecould get from her doctor after many tests was it was her birth control. if your still having a period and everything is normal than you should be fine. there are chances with anything that you take that isnt natural

I just thought you might be interested in an alternative method of birth control. It doesn't use any pills or rings or plastics. Just charting of your cycles. Even if you don't use it for contrception, it's a very interesting method to get in touch with your body, and know exactly what's going on at any given moment. Birth control pills manipulate your natural hormone levels. If your body doesn't recover from this hormone imbalance, you will have a hard to conceiving. If this happens, see a reproductive endocrinologist, who can re-balance your hormones; progesterone will most likely be very low (PMS is a symptom)

Yeah, a lot of studies say that 10 years is the max for birth control. Anything after that and it will be extremely difficult to have a regular period and/or conceive.

If you feel that you should stop taking them, than DO! I feel that birth control should really only be used for medical reasons... but thats my opinion. If anything... try a different type of contraception.. use condoms until you two are ready for children.

actually, the pill can protect you from many uterus and ovary problems, and in that way it can protect your fertility
I've heard many times there are no facts to support the claim that the pill can hurt your fertility
