It appears to me that 'Yahoo Answers' is merely doing people's homework for them. Many of the questions in here are obvious homework questions and not something you run across on a daily basis. I know that the internet is the information highway but I also feel that parents and teachers should start putting some type of restriction on how they use the internet to do their homework. What are some suggestions you have that might help in this delima? Or do you think it's hopeless and that we are doomed into have future leaders, workers and teachers of the world who have become dependant on having others do thier work for them or just simply cheat their way into the Legal and Medical professions while inevitably corrupting our future?

What do I do when someone asks me the principals behind some mathematical equation? I don't answer it. Not that I don't know it, but what if I were wrong, I wouldn't want that on my head. And if it's so simple they should not need assistance I won't answer it. But what if there are teachers that are on here with the rest of us that can help them? I don't know that there should be a stop to this even tough I don't necessarily agree with it. I can't help but think of the kids who are beyond what their parents educational abilities are, and sitting at home with a trig question (there was one yesterday) and no one to ask help from. There are many kids who are educationally beyond the level or the expertise of their parents. Who do they ask when at home without their teacher or professor? I'm more concerned about the people who are asking business questions and getting their 'work' done by others on here than I am a kid who asks one question about their homework. So I guess, I think that we already have leaders, workers, and teachers who have become dependent on others to do their work for them. Is it too late to change that? I don't know. But the world is still a beautiful place where people help other people to learn and grow to make this world a better place. Maybe our future will be focused on working together to reach goals instead of being such an independent society.

As a teacher, there's no real way for me to monitor my students' use of the Internet for their homework any more than there is for me to monitor their use of older siblings and friends. Parents, on the other hand, should have complete control of what their children do on the Internet. Without close monitoring, children are free to cheat all they want. Hopefully responsible adults will answer with HOW to approach a particular homework problem rather than just giving the answer. I have to say that I have seen this sort of "responsibility" among Answers users.
It's only hopeless if we allow it be hopeless. Plagiarism and cheating should always be treated as serious offenses. Leniency shouldn't be given when students are caught.

If this got out of hand it could become a problem and result in the necessary closure of Yahoo! Answers and similar sites. Luckily there exist informal groups have formed to deliberately abuse those who use Yahoo! Answers to cheat on their homework. The goal is to post believable, yet completely false answers, thus rendering any information gleaned from Yahoo Answers useless. The hope is that anyone using Yahoo Answers to cheat will receive a failing grade. What a great idea!

I think some of the people put questions from their homework. I dont think there will be any way they can curb it, because people ask so many different types of questions that it may be hard for them to discern the real questions from those just too lazy to study and find out themselves.

I think in every job there will be those who just "float" through and have no real knowledge or expertise. Sad, but yes, that is the state of the world of technology today.

To limit the use of the computer at home would be up to the parents. My daughter uses it to study, but that is about it.

Yahoo answers is doing people's homework for them. I actually used it for homework assistance before. I had to write an essay (300 level college class) and I was having trouble thinking of a specific topic. The question I asked helped me find a topic. It didn't do the homework for me.
I don't agree with completely answering math problems for people in school. That's not right at all. I understand when you are having problems and need tips on what steps are involved in solving problems. I don't know how it could be balanced, though.

Yahoo Answers is a tool. The technology itself is not doing anything. Children are using the technology to get out of doing their homework. Frankly, I find the whole thing funny. Because having read some of the completely illiterate replies to some of the obviously homework related questions, I suspect these kids are failing in their courses!

In many ways, I think the problem will correct itself. I see this as the normal scenario:

1. Kid gets homework assignment
2. Kid posts question on Yahoo Answers hoping someone will do his homework for him.
3. Kid gets tons of completely illiterate or wrong responses, but doesn't know any better because he didn't actually do the work himself.
4. Kid uses answers to finish homework.
5. Kid turns in homework to teacher.
6. Teacher laughs hysterically (or cries hysterically, depending) and grades paper with a big, fat "F".
7. Kid either fails class or learns to do homework himself.

yeah alot of college students post questions on here they have trouble with finding. As far as College is concerned .... In most cases finding the answers is not the biggest issue but more so retaining them later for actual application that really matters.

I think that the only way to eliminate this from happening is to stop giving homework all together and only do classwork with nothing on the desk but book paper and pencil

Yahoo answers is part of the Internet. The Internet is a tool. I use the Internet every day as a tool to find answers in my professional life. What would restraining part of an enormously valuable tool say to our youth? I believe if someone is using ask to answer question on homework then they should be commended for their savvy. It is the educators who need to realize this situation exists and figure out a way to amend it.

I hate the homework questions and can not believe that people actually answer them...they apparently don't understand that they are not helping these kids learn anything and are so obsessed with getting the points that they forget about the "learning" part of education...
I just keep saying do your own homework...then they report me and I get a violation notice as "not an answer"...I think answers should not allow homework questions and that we should certainly step up and stop answering them!!!! Good question.

agree with yr line of thinking

Many questions show laziness, pure laziness

some are so simple that a Yahoo or Google search can directly find the answer

It is starnge that many school children born in the age of computers have no clue on how to search

Only around 50% are really question.
