My daughter does the same thing when she's teething. When she bites, I tell her very firmly "no," then I remove her from the breast and place her on the floor and turn my back to her for a few seconds. Of course, then I pick her up and hug her and reassure her, but I don't immediately put her back on the boob.

The other day, she bit me so badly that I screamed (unintentionally). It really freaked her out, and I felt bad ... but she hasn't bitten me since then.

Also, I've noticed that she tends to bite when she's not really hungry, so I try to avoid letting her nurse out of boredom.

My son was the same way. He had four teeth at Six months. He would bite me so hard I seriously considered giving it up. A couple of things helped. I bought nipple shields (you can google them; they don't cost much) and I would also push him into my breast a bit, just enough for him to pull away for a breath, that made him let go. Then I would not nurse him again for at least 15 minutes. You see, if he is biting you he cannot be nursing so he isn't eating anyway. If you keep doing this he will get hungry enough to nurse and won't bite. He did this for about 2 weeks but the first few days were the worst. After that I could feel the change in his mouth and tell when he was just playing/teething and not sucking. Then I knew when to stop him. Of course at 10 months you could give a sippie when he bites as well, my sons would never take a bottle either.

Here is a link to the advice I got:

Blimey that's a tough one! I was only able to breast feed for about 2 months and had to give up and I found it really hard to stop because you build such a bond through breast feeding don't you, its like yours and baby's time only and it feels lovely.

I can appreciate the discomfort at being bit whilst nursing though and I really feel for you, I don't really know what to suggest, I know you say he wont feed from a bottle but if there's only bottle on offer he'll adjust. You may have already tried this whilst trying to transfer to bottle but maybe try revealing your breast as if going to breast feed but guide the bottle in, it maybe the flesh on flesh comfort that baby wants more than just the breast!?!?!?! Persevere with this one though he wont fall for it first time around. Once he's used to the bottle gradually cover up so to speak.

When I made the transfer I would lift my top slightly so that my little one could touch my skin.

Just an idea, good look huni

You need to start adding bottle feedings during the day. It sounds like it's time to start weaning. He'll drink it if he's hungry. Just keep offering the bottle until he takes it, he'll have to eventually... I'm not saying starve him but if he absolutely refuses bottle and even when very hungry won't take it, get a guard, it's a piece of plastic molded in a nipple shape, it'll at least keep him from breaking skin until you can find a better solution. Also talk to your pediatrician he/she might be able to give you some tips to make him take the bottle.

When he bits, automatically pull him into your breast so he unlatches and then put your breast away and tell him that if he bites, no more more milk. He just needs to get the hint that biting = bad. Been there done that with two kids. Hang in there!
