I'm using a peavey four channel mixer and audicity as my recording program, is there anyway to get fx without running through an FX pedal? Like a program I can download? Thanks!

No not really, your distortion needs to ben done at thesource not afterwards, you will not get a balanced effect. It will sound bad.

If you have some money, go out and get a BOSS Digital Recording Studio with a Built in CD/R-Drive. I picked one up for $1300 and it has hundreds of effects for vocals, guitars, keyboards or whatever you plug in. If you don't have the cash then.

Do you have a amp? plug the guitar into the amp, then line it from the amp to the mixer and then mixer to the laptop. And control the Distortion from the amp.

I don't know of any free download, but you can buy some pretty good sounding amp and effects modeling plug-ins. I prefer to record guitar clean then add the effects because once it's recorded, you can't take the effects back out. If you record it clean then add the effects afterward, then you can always tweek your sound to sit in the mix better. Check out www.musiciansfriend.com or www.sweetwater.com
