It may be your wood
burning trees like pine releases a lot of sap/tar.
The glass is made for the high tempertures associated with fireplaces-
I would suggest that if you burn some hardwood ie maple oak, and get the fire going real weel, the tar should simply burn off

Put about half amonia and half water in a spray bottle, spray on the glass and let it sit a few minutes and wipe with a newspaper. If all the tar doesn't come off, then use a scraper blade and scrape it off, it won't hurt the glass.

As a custodian, i've come across tar on our tile floors occasionally. We use Goo Gone dabbed on a clean cloth and use some elbow grease to get the job done. It does a great job.

We simply spray ammonia full strength, and about 30 seconds later, scrape it off with razor blade scraper.

WD40 is very good at removing tar spots from a car, so it should work on this. Spray a little onto a cloth and let it soak on the spot, you should see it start disolving.
Hope this helps.
