Yes, they have found ancient rivers. The most Popular ancient river is Valles Marineris. There is a theory that mars had a magnetic field. Mars had ancient volcanoes which powered its magnetic field. Eventually the valconoes went extinct, one by one they fell. With the volcanoes dead and not powering the magnetic field the sun's solar flares ate away mars. The Magnetic field is what helped mars with water, plants, and yes, life.

Absolutely--although "many" means a couple of billion years, most likely. But the scientific findings from the Mars rovers and orbiting satellites that have been studying Mars are providing more and more evidence that Mars in the distant past was probably similar to Earth. Not exactly, of curse. But Mars appears to have had a much thicker atmosphere at onetime, and probably had liquid surface water. So--to answer the next obvious question--we don not know if Mars had primitive life forms then as the Earth did--but we do know Mars was enough like Earth that it could have had life.

Very similar?

Doubtful, due to its distance and (crucially) its mass.
That is, its mass make many of its atmospheric changes
inevitable - the loss of the lighter elements that hadn't
become bonded with heavier compounds, for instance,
is extremely predictable. Perhaps, there was a time when
those elements were present, but that would have been
when the planet still had lots of molten activity.

That is, more similar in some respects, less similar in others.

It even of had life, but it would have been very different than
life here.

In the beginning of the Solar System, all the planets were swirling masses of gases. So, all of them were almost similar. It is the cooling part which caused which caused differences.

It is possible that it resembled earth a bit but it was a long way off from being what earth is to-day.
