IF they had a job and proper insurance like they SHOULD HAVE we would not still be supporting them.
THESE PEOPLE NEVER HAD A JOB AND INSURANCE so you and I have to continue to support them wherever they choose to go? PATHETIC!

THEY SHOULD BE CALLED THE KATRINA LOTTO WINNERS. THE SO CALLED KATRINA VICTIMS. THAT HURRICANE WAS A WINDFALL FOR THE PEOPLE THAT SURVIVED. THEY WERE RELOCATED ALL OVER THE COUNTRY AND THEY ARE DOING VERY WELL. THEY HAVE SIPHONED OFF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN SUPPORT. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. LIKE NEW ORLEANS WAS ANY GOOD ANYWAY. THE ONES THAT STOOD BEHIND ARE SHOOTING EACH OTHER LIKE THEY WERE IN THE WILD WEST.

Amen to that, sister!

If anyone says that I'm uncaring or not sympathetic, let me say that I'm from the Katrina area.

Many of the storm victims were not employed or insured, true. The only ones that should be still receiving federal assistance is those who were before the storm, too- handicapped, welfare situations, etc.

However, let me also say that the federal government and insurance companies also set a bad example. Many families that just needed a small loan from the government were turned away. Why? Because they had insurance! On the other hand, the insurance companies have yet to pay a good portion of their customers who have been paying in for years, and those that they did pay back got next to nothing. We in Mississippi learned that it's best to save our money on insurance and just trust the government to help us, because if we have insurance, there's no way we're getting any help at all.

A local government sent pump operators here far away before the storm. Please look up "aaron broussard" on wikipedia to get a better understanding. Some of this disaster was natural, but a portion was "man-made" via the ignorance of the corps of engineers and others. As a katrina evacuee that lived in Houston for 9 months, I lost my entire business. The phone company has to re-wire the city-- the streets, and sewerage need to be replaced. Some people are pure ghetto, but if you came down here and saw the loss, you would be amazed. You might think "well to hell with New Orleans......." But the fact is we fought off the British successfully, we designed the Higgins boat for "D-Day", we designed the "Textron" amphibious vessels that were used by the Navy Seals to trick Iraq during the first Gulf War. We supply 90% of the nation's seafood, and selflessly let big America pump our Oil for the rest of the nation to use--with NO royalties. The people down here care. I have lived in NYC, L.A., Palm Beach, and Texas. I wouldn't dare live anywhere else because the food down here is incredible. So please have some empathy for my dad, who lost his house; and the insurance company that took the repair check and just applied it to the outstanding balance. Lots of people (insured and uninsured) can't rebuild because they have hands tied behind the back from insurance companies like Allstate and state farm. The non-payment of insurance proceeds is the real reason for the delay... And those in public housing have ALWAYS complained and will continue to do so. To heck with them.

The sad thing is that a lot of them had insurance, but the insurance companies never paid them. Those that did get a small portion of insurance money didn't get enough to give them a new start at the same level they left off in. Some that chose to rebuild got scammed by shady contractors that either didn't complete the job, and in some cases, never started the job. They just took the money and ran.

I hope you pray to God that you are never the victim of not just one "Act of God" but two!!!

Do you have any, any idea of how difficult it is to get a job right now?? And insurance??? A minimum wage job doesn't even cover food and shelter. Most companies provide NO health insurance any longer. And extra insurance--for rental property???? Come on! Get real and get a heart!

You may have a "perfect life" right now. (I once did, too!) But circumstances can change in a second! How about a little empathy?? Sympathy?? Compassion?? Or aren't those words in your lexicon?

EDIT: Oh, btw, do you know about the people in the hurricane's path who DID have insurance?? Because the actual damage happened by "flood" (after the levees broke, BECAUSE of the hurricane), the homeowners' insurance companies would not--repeat--WOULD NOT--pay for the people's losses. The insurance (???) companies would only pay if they had flood insurance.

PS--I have a job, but I can't afford insurance; will you buy me some because I "should" have it?

...

The jobless calling the jobless...well jobless. That's funny. Here's some infomation you could have gotten had you stepped off your boat and talked to some actual people when you were there...they had jobs, they had insurance. The insurance companines won't pay for some things, the national flood insurance won't pay for others. Not that I expect you to know anything about this kind of stuff, i am sure your husband takes care of everything so you can slack off and contribute nothing but crappy opinions about fellow americans, but i will try anyhow. Imagine your house has been ripped apart by winds, a tree falls on it, and it floods. Some is done by hurricane, some is done by damage from surrounding houses, and some is done from the levees breaking. Who pays out for what? If you paid attention to the news, you would see that the first lawsuits are NOW being heard against the insurance companies who are not paying out. But you see, when you live in the real world, things aren't so scary...and we are still paying because the job is not done, and won't be for awhile. I really hope you don't like cajun food, or jazz, or mardi gras (GASP! A christian holiday) or integrated schools, etc...because you have NO to thank for all of that, if you were actually thankful for anything in your life except your husband's paycheck... Remeber RLP, you are only your husband's paycheck away from being one of these people. And as much as I don't think you have anything of value to offer this world, I would still not wish that on you. I can't blame you for being ignorant...but I will do my best to try and teach you about the rest of the world. Peace RLP, and pray for your fellow americans. They need it. oh, BTW, why are we still supporting Iraq? Yeah, that's what i thought

You knew everyone from New Orleans? I wasn't aware that none of them had jobs or insurance? I also didn't know that the insurance companies (who refused to give insurance to many of those places) were actually allowing them go get insurance. I also didn't know we actually did help them the first time since I continued to see houses demolished. I just hope if you ever have a tragedy happen to your family and home, people will be more supportive then you.

I think we should have taken the money we spent in Iraq and bought everyone in the south a new house.

That's only partially true. Some people should be back up and running but had more things happen. If the Government was run properly, we could afford to help and not have it be so pricey (emotionally also).

...it's hard to have a job when the place where you worked and your house were flooded over with water.

But hey, why look at the facts when you can overgeneralize everything? You're in your warm house... what does someone else's problem matter to you, aside from the fact that you can sit in a cushy chair and yell at them for it...

What people are you talking about? Do you know these Florida refugees personally? How do you know they didn't have jobs?

Why are you even asking such empty questions?

You're right it is pathetic. I live in the midwest where we are still trying to recover from the worst ice storm in the history of this region. Now it was not of the magnitude of Katrina.
But my point is this, most everyone I know was out at the minimum of about $1,000 to have to go out and purchase alternate heat sources. The damage from the storm was in excess of $200 million dollars for the area.
Now Fema and Sema are helping the local governements and utility companies. But private individuals are getting $0 from any government entity. All the while we are still paying taxes for some lazy Katrina survivors years after the fact. Screw em throw them in the ocean..hope they can swim.
