I might write a letter to the editor and I'd like to know just how involved the process is.

IF your state issues a CWP, go to your local police department. You'll have a form to fill out, get fingerprinted and have a background check done. if you pass all of that your information in sent in and checked at a higher level.

then you wait. for a period of time usually between 6 weeks and 6 months for your permit to be approved

Many states laws vary on this subject. You should contact your State's State Police agency and they can give you the instructions. In Indiana, where I live, you have to apply to the county in which you live.

In most states, even with a "personal protection permit" such as I have held for nearly 30 years, carrying a concealed weapon remains a felony, even if you have a permit.

Further, you cannot carry a weapon on your person when you travel outside your state. In such instances, you will have to obtain a Federal Firearms Permit from the ATF or obtain a permit from each state wherein you intend to travel (which is difficult).

It depends on your state. NJ, CA, etc refuse to issue concealed carry permits. Check out http://www.nraila.org/GunLaws/ to look up your states laws. It usually involves background checks, a fee, and handgun safety training.
