clothes, diapers, socks, blankets, big items such as stroller, high chair, etc.
i went to a baby shower not too long ago and instead of a card we were to bring a book so that's an idea too so you can get lots of books to read to the new baby.

get neutral colors such as yellows or greens or even white.

Baby Clothes, Basic Layette, Feeding and Bedding Needs

What does a baby really need in the first weeks at home? The answer is - not much. This baby needs checklist will help you choose the basic baby items, often called a layette, that a baby needs to have in the first precious weeks of life.

Baby Needs: Clothing and Layette
5-10 onesies or rompers, depending on how often you want to do laundry
5-7 baby sleepers or nightgowns
1 cold weather sleeper if necessary
5-7 pairs of baby socks
1-2 newborn hats, depending on climate

Baby Needs: Diapers and Bath Items
2 packs of disposable diapers or enough cloth diapers for at least two days. Newborns can soil up to 10 diapers per day.
1 pack of disposable wipes or 10 cloth wipes
Waterproof pad for diaper changes
3-5 baby washcloths
1-2 hooded towels, if desired.
Adult towels will work, too.
1 bottle of gentle baby wash
Baby nail clippers
Digital thermometer

Baby Needs: Bedding and Feeding
3-4 fitted sheets for crib, cradle, co-sleeper or bassinet
5-7 lightweight blankets
1-2 heavier blankets, depending on climate
10 burp cloths
5-8 bottles, if you're bottle feeding
Breastfeeding pillow, if desired
That's it! While there are many baby products on the market that make a parent's life easier, most are wants, not needs. While it may be tempting to buy every gadget on the shelf, remember, your baby will be just as happy with the basic items that he or she really needs.

If you're registering at Babies'R'Us they have a list of must-haves that you can work from. If you don't want to go that route, here is a good list:
http://www.modernmom.com/site/docs/RegistryChecklist.pdf

I just had my baby 9 weeks ago. My top 5 must-haves in the first few weeks were:

1. Onesies and sleepers (I needed preemie sized clothes for my 7 pound baby girl for the first 2 weeks because newborn clothes were too big. Consider getting a few preemie outfits {pants and shirts} just in case the baby doesn't fit well into newborn clothes yet).

2. Blankets (We live in a cold climate so blankets definitely got a lot of use)

3. Pacifiers (Didn't think we'd use them, but they turned out to be our best friend!!)

4. "Moses Basket" (This is like a portable bassinette. I used this thing ALL of the time since she slept all day long and I didn't want to have to put her in her bassinette upstairs away from me.)

5. Diapers, ointment, wipes

And here are the things we've used the most since:
- Vibrating bouncy seat (she lives in this thing!!)
- Swing
- Breastpump
- Glider
- Boppy pillow
- Toys with mirrors or lights
- Bathtub for kitchen sink
- Hooded bath towels
- Socks and mittens (we use the mittens only to keep her hands warm at night since 3 month clothes don't have the mittens on the sleeves anymore)
- Car seat/stroller
- Diaper bag
- Baby Bjorn

Good luck and have fun :o)

Car Seat, High Chair, Baby Swing, Stroller or Carraige, Clothes (Can be yellow, green, red)especially onsies, sleep and plays, blankets, sheets, diapers are especially great, bottles, gift certificate for mom to the local baby store so that after the baby is born she can get some little boy or girl outfits.

Go for things besides clothes, blankets etc....people tend to buy nothing but clothes (cause theyre the most fun to buy!) Often the mother gets bombarded with so many cute outfits that the baby grows out of them before getting a change to wear them!.

How about a beautiful basket full of essential stuff: Diapers, baby wipes, diaper rash cream, baby powder, baby bath wash and shampoo, baby thermometers, baby fingernail clippers, pacifiers....things that aren't wearable but still really needed!!!

Trust me, the mom will truly value stuff like this!

Good luck!

Diapers are always a good idea. Ask for an assortment of different sizes. Blankets, lots of sleepers and onesies. Asking for bulk sized boxes of wipes is a good idea as well.
