I'll give you a brief description starting from the tallest to the shortest.
Center : He is usually the tallest person on the court who stands the closest to the basketball hoop and is the last line of defense when someone tries to slam the ball or get a layup. Shaquille O'neal and Yao Ming are in this group.
Power Forward : This position also plays close to the basketball hoop, however this person would be a little more mobile and they are expected to do almost the same functions as the center.
Karl Malone and Dirk Nowitzki are in this group
Small Forward : This position is a little more free to create shots on the basketball court. Tracy Mcrady and Larry Bird are examples.
Shooting Guard : This postition is for someone who is a good scorer and can also handle the ball, as far as dribbling it and distributing it as well. Vince Carter and Allen Iverson are listed as shooting guards.
Point Guard : This position is very essential for the flow of your offense, thise position is often compared to a quarterback in football. They must bring the ball up court and distribute it to the player who is in the best position to score or make a play.
Steve Nash and Tony Parker are examples.

Small Forward/Power forward: There job is to rebound and to score.
Center; The center is always the tallest person on the court. There job is to score. they are also the most important part of the defense

the postions are guards, forwards and center. Traditionally there are two guards, two forwards and on center. However, some teams play with three guards and two forwards of they do not have a true center. They are also refered to as numbers as well. The point guard is the one, the two is the shooting guard, the three is the small forward, the 4 is the power forward and the 5 is the center.
