Chinchillas are small rodents that are originally from the mountainous area of south america. They have 50 -100 hairs per follicle and live in colder climates. They are nocturnal herbivores whose diet consists of mainly hay and other grasses. There are two species of chinchilla only one breed (chinchilla chinchilla) is generally kept as pets. They live approximately 10 - 15 years. They live in packs and are very social. They make great pets when kept properly. The gestation is exactly 111 days, the longest for any rodent. Babies are born with all their hair, eyes open and able to climb and jump as an adult would. Babies are approximately 1 1/2 to 2 inches in length, they triple in size during the first 3 weeks. An adult chinchilla can range up to 14 inches in length and weighing approximately 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 pounds. Anything else? I've been an owner for about 5 years and I worked at a pet store for 2, you can email me through my main page if you need anything else.

I think chinchillas are so cute. About all I know off-hand about them is yes, they do take dust-baths and I thought them to be desert-dwelling creatures. Here's a website I found:

Their fur is 30 times softer then human hair. They take dust/ash baths to keep their fur soft and from matting. They are a social animal. I think they are nocturnal (sleeps during the day).

if you intend to keep them, make sure the temperature is not too warm.. as i live in a tropical country, i actually have a fan attached to the cage and left it on the whole day. they can't take stress that much so make sure you have a place whereby there isn't much noise.

they groom themselves a lot and do not smell that much.
