Divisible Definition

2016-11-14 20:39:05 · answer #3 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

Here's an informal definition.

x is divisible by y if y goes into x evenly. For example:

4 is divisible by 2,
15 is divisible by 5

and ANY number is divisible by 1.

But

5 is not divisible by 2
8 is not divisible by 3.

An informal way of checking is using your calculator to divide; if you don't get numbers after the decimal point, then it is divisible by that.

5 divided by 2 is equal to 2.5, so 5 is not divisible by 2.
8 divided by 3 is approximately 2.66666, so 8 is not divisible by 3.
