Depends on WHY they are digging. If you leave them out in the yard all the time with no human interaction then they are probably just bored and looking for something to do. You can help eliminate this behaviour by exercising them more and just plain spending more time with them. If that is not the case, you can try burying some hardware cloth type fence material (square mesh, heavier guage wire than chicken wire) a few inches below the ground along the fence line. You can attach the edge of the fencing material to the bottom of your fence to keep them from pulling it away as they try to dig. Also anchor the other edge of the wire mesh in the ground with earth staples before you bury it. If you cover the area with river rocks or stones they may be less inclined to dig there.

Don't know if my method is practical for you but here it is. I have two Great Pyrenees who guard the few goats I have. They are only 11 mo. and have dug out several times. I've been able to stop them for a while by attaching a 12 to 18 in. strip for fencing to the bottom of the fence on the inside. They usually find another place to dig and I start all over again. Don't know if this would be practical or not and you don't have to use heavy wire. Depending on the size of your dogs, mine weigh about 85 and 95 lbs and still growing, but if they are not large I'd recommend just plain chicken wire. Maybe that, coupled with red pepper, might be enough. Good luck

I have seen people attach a 1 foot piece of wood, with a hole drilledin the middle and atatched to the dogs collar allowing it to hang in front of the dogs legs. This appears to prevent them from digging because it gets in their way.
Same theory - I suppose - as hanging the dead chicken around their neck?

But really, training is the answer - teaching them that digging is not acceptable behavior.

If it's just certain spots sprinkle red pepper where they dig. They'll get it on their paws and up their nose and won't dig again! It doesn't hurt them though.

allow them to dig by just saying "Stop it & leave that alone or
get outta there"because that is a good command forward ok?
