If you want mystery try James Lee Burke. Also try Carl Hisassen for mystery with some humor. Best American authors though include Hemmingway and Steinbeck. Don't get so wrapped up in new books that you skip the classics

If you are into fantasy you need to check out The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, Stephen Donaldson. Easily the most erudite author of fantasy.
Pat Conroy for general fiction.

I'd say it was the author that is on welfare and writes a book that makes them more money than the Queen of England. No other author in history has been able to do that.
JK Rowling

Anita Shreve. She is wonderful with contemporary fiction. Her writing style (grammar, choice of wording, etc.) is amazing and every one of her books end with a twist. I would recommend "All He Ever Wanted" or "The Last Time They Met." The Last Time They Met is written in reverse chronological order (starts with now and ends with the past.) I am a huge fan of Anita Shreve.

Dean Koontz is great for suspense. I like Scott Westerfeld for realistic sci-fi. Mercedes Lackey for fantasy. Laurell K. Hamilton if you're a vampire lover.
