Put it back, please!

1. In much of the US you need a permit to collect wild turtles- often part of the fishing laws.

2. Wild caught pet turtles NEVER do as well in captivity as captive bred turtles do. They are loaded with parasites, stress out BADLY over being caught adn dropped in a new habitat, etc.

3. Far too many turtle populations in the US are already pressured. The numbers are falling, habitat is being lost, species are becoming threatened, etc.

4. We often 'rescue' turtles and think we are doing them a favor. Wild turtles, however, usually live for over a decade in the wild- but rarely for more than a year in captivity -unless- you really make a committment to it.

5. To do this right is going to cost you a lot more than you think. A decent turtle set-up easily runs over $200. A decent filter (low end, noisy, but the right type) runs at least $50 by itself, and the average UVB bulb starts at $30 (and only lasts 6 months).

Cool. I found a turtle once. I named it Billy Bob Joe. Or was it Joe Billy Bob. But anyway it was a racing turtle and it was fast. It was really cool. But I couldn't take care of it so we let it go at the park!

Where did you find it at?? If you found it in a river or a lake its propbably a terrapin cooter. I have 3 of them and they are so cool. They can get to be pretty big so if you keep it just make sure you keep it in water!

There was a little turtle
Who lived in a box.
He swam in puddles
And climbed on rocks.
He snapped at the mosquito,
He snapped at the flea.
He snapped at the minnow,
And he snapped at me.
He caught the mosquito,
He caught the flea.
He caught the minnow,
But he didn't catch me!
