anhedonia -- a loss of pleasure in things formerly found pleasurable. this can be a symptom of depression. you should see an MD to discuss this matter with.

That sounds like a symptom of depression. You may want to seek out a depression quiz. You can do that by googling depression quiz and take one. Then if you have enought symptoms you may want to see a therapist. Don't just talk to an MD they will only put you on drugs which will take some symptoms away but make you feel numb and like a shell of a person. A therapist will treat the root problem that is causing the depression and you will be able to enjoy your music again.

That sounds horrible.

There are a few things that I would suggest.

1) There are ridiculous amounts of music out there that I can gaurantee you've never heard. Obviously your personal tastes in music might limit you, but you should give everything a chance.

2) If you are using some kind of MP3 player, and you listen to the same songs over and over (either on an ipod, or just on your computer) you will always burn out - try to vary up your playlist - or find a decent radio station online or on the air. I don't have any qualms about downloading music for free (though I usually will go out and buy something if I like it) - they have made it to where you can download just about anything for fairly cheap, and you can always go hunt used CD places for stuff.

3) If you don't already play an instrument, you should pick one up - not everybody is a natural at it, but with a little practice you can let music into your life in a whole new way. Don't worry about being the best, or even doing anything with it - just play for your own happiness. Try not to get frustrated, especially when listening to other people play - different people have different talents (plus a lot of them have massive budgets and people to tweak things in the studio to make them sound like that).

If you are feeling depressed over something else, it might be affecting the way you feel about the music you normally listen to -fortunately music might very well be the solution to getting you back on track again. I know it has helped me through hard times in my life, and I'm always amazed, because it was right there the whole time, waiting for me to listen to it.

Another good idea is to go out and see some shows - check out local bands, or see if there are any bigger acts coming near to where you live. Nothing gets me more pumped up than seeing a live show (with the exception of playing one). If you are stuck in the middle of nowhere then you can still check out some live shows online - go to youtube and search for your favorites, or buy DVD's of them.

Like I said, I have no idea what your musical tastes are, but here are a few quick favs of mine from across a pretty wide spectrum:

Heavy: The Melvins, Fugazi, Rage Against the Machine, Sepultura, Slayer

Techno/Drum 'n Bass/Trip Hop: Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, Orbital, Bjork/Sugarcubes, Tricky, Aphex Twin, Paul Van Dyk, Paul Oakenfold (nearly anyone with the letters 'DJ' before their name), Meat Beat Manifesto, Prodigy

Reggae: Bob Marley (of course) Peter Tosh, Burning Spear, Black Uhuru

Rap: NWA (old school), A Tribe Called Quest, Cypress Hill, Beastie Boys - there are also tons of hip hop artists that aren't just about screaming ni**a, shooting people, and talking about smoking blunts, drinking 40's and calling women b**ches and ho's - there are some that are much more positive, and use their vocal talent to make some great music.

Funk: George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, Bootsy Collins, The Mothership Connection

Industrial: Ministry, NIN, KMFDM

Punk: NOFX, The Dead Kennedies, Ramones, Pixies

Rockabilly: The Reverend Horton Heat (one of the best bands of all time - especially live), The Cramps

Just Plain Awesome: They Might be Giants, Beck, Cake, Rush, Pink Floyd

There are tons of others, Freestyle Jazz, Dub, Ska, Classical, Country (i don't mind some older country - the newer stuff is almost 100% crap), Bluegrass, Folk, R&B, Gospel, Fusion, Blues, all manner of Rock 'n Roll & Heavy Metal, Swing, Tons of other kinds of dance music and music from all over the world.

(In case you didn't notice, I love music. It is my life.) Good Luck!!

I think it's just a matter of taste. I have always found my mom a very strange person because she hates music... I can't relate to it and don't understand it at all.

Maybe your tastes are changing and you're trying to keep yourself from growing into another direction?

Try changing it up a little bit? Throw something you normally wouldn't listen to into the mix and see if you can't find some enjoyment in that?

Age has nothing to do with it... It just serves to broaden the spectrum. I am a musician though so I listen to and appreciate almost everything.

Try learning an instrument?

Just listen to what pleases you at the moment and don't worry about it. One day you may hear one you past favorite tunes playing on the radio or in a department store and find that you like it again. Music is to be enjoyed not fretted over.

You are obviously knocking on a bit now.

Next thing you know you will be complaining about that racket and the fact that the boomady bang bang music of nowadays isnt like it used to be.

You are on the slippery slope into incontinance pants and mashing up your dinner.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Seems to me that you're maturing......you don't find the music youused to like interesting any more. Don't worry, you'll soon find another type fulfilling, just be patient and experiment! Listen to vrious types of music until something clicks!
Same thing happened to me!
