Because Spanos is an idiot and should have fired AJ Smith. That guy is a coniving jerk and doesnt belong in the Profootball world. Marty tried to make up and figure out what AJ was so mad about but every time he asked him what he did AJ would reply "I dont want to talk about it" What a jerk. Aj makes bad decisions for the Chargers (Trading Drew Brees, and now letting Donnie Edwards go) He is a moron and so is The Spanos family. If I had the money I would buy the Chargers and get people who actually help the team not tear it apart. Yes Marty had bad playoff records but we went 14-2 under his direction and we lost to the Patriots who are like THE post season team. I wish if they were going to fire Marty they would have done it after the lost to the Pats so he could have found a job and we could have hired Cam or Wade for our head coach instead of losing our head coach, offensive and defensive coordinator, and other assistant coaches. I fell really bad about next year. i am afraid there will be more "dysfunction" than there was this year. I hope AJ doesnt get rid of LaDanian or Shawne now too.

The reasons for Marty Schottenheimer being fired by the San Diego Chargers on Monday was a strained relationship with General Manager A.J.Smith which reached a breaking point when four assistants left the organization for better positions with other teams, two of whom have accepted head coaching positions with Miami & Dallas.
Team President Dean Spanos released a statement on Monday saying "Our fans deserve to know what changed for me over the last month. When I decided to move ahead with Marty Schottenheimer in mid-January, I did so with the exception that the core of his fine coaching staff would remain intact. Unfortunately, that did not prove to be the case, and the process of dealing with these coaching changes convinced me that we simply could not move forward with such dysfunction between our head coach and general manager. In short, this entire process over the last month convinced me beyond any doubt that I had to act to change this untenable situation and create an environment where everyone at Charger Park would be pulling in the same direction and working at a championship level. I expect exactly that from our entire Charger organization in 2007"
Schottemheimer is still owed $4 million for the final year of his contract with the Chargers, as the firing was "without cause."

To my knowledge, the President of the Chargers was upset that the two coordinators left the team for head coaching jobs. He apparently is putting blame on Marty for this. Which is a big mistake considering they went 14-2 with a first time starting quarterback. Second, coordinators leaving the team is an administration problem, not coaching. Big mistake.

I do believe Spanos fired Marty ...well not sure..oh ya..he is a loser..and spanos wants a winner, not a weiner...Once Cam and Wade left, I fell Spanos had no choice but to let Marty go..I hope they do not get Johnson though, I think that would be a bigger mistake..The Chargers have a great football team, great players...now the fun job is to find a great coach. As for being fired (marty), I think he knew it was coming, he really isn;t that good of a coach..too emotional...not a good director...too bad for the Chargers though...

Cowher. He needs a crew with a qb. He runs that protection and he will run the football and be useful. I suggested this on the starting up of the three hundred and sixty 5 days. they prefer a coach with some fireplace. i'm a 9ers fan. Turner is an effective oc and poor head coach

I think the Chargers front office will be sorry for this move. Hey me might of lost a big playoff game against the Patriots, but all the teams who's season was over and sitting at home are thinking he going to get that monkey off the back one day and will pick him up. Don't you know all these teams that hire new coaches this season wish they would of done it earlier.

Well, he was the winningest coach to never win a super bowl, perhaps they are tired of him getting close but never hitting it big? Seriously though, who fires their coach after a season like that? I hope the Chargers go 7-9 next year and ask for him to come back (Although with players like that, I'm not sure how likely that is). I say bad move.

GM's don't like to take responsibility for anything but success and don't like being told by the coach what he will and won't do. Just ask Matt Millen.
Word is that most of his assistants are taking other jobs and they didn't like it so they gave Marty the boot. Trust me, he WILL be picked up by some team! Jerry Jones is probably already looking for a way to get out of his newly hired coach.

It was because of his poor playoff performances. I saw the Owner talking on ESPN and he said the reason he fired him was because the rest of the coaching staff left. There is no reason for him to try to make it work with new coaches so he got rid of him.

Marty has proven he does not know how to win in the postseason. But the good news is that San Diego just handed the division over to Denver.
