We just planted 11 Leyland Cypress trees, 15 Azaleas and a Fig tree. I realized that after the work was done that it's no longer going to be as easy as just cutting the grass as I have created a "weed-eating" nightmare for my hubby. I spent alot of money on the trees/shrubs and don't have alot left for borders around each tree. Is there something that I can use that is inexpensive to make this easier? Cut 2x4s? Cheap bricks? Any ideas? Our property is .75 acres; in zone 8.

I would just dig up the grass around the base of the trees, lay down some wet newspapers (to create a barrier and it's also environmentally friendly) and then put down a mulch over that--cypress is cheap and works well.

I like the mondo grass idea. I usually border my beds with large rocks that I find on my property. But for trees, you wanna make sure you don't cover the soil around the trunk with stones. Also, if you mulch, don't mulch way up on the trunk of the tree. Will cause rotting. Make sure there is a nice ring around the trunk for respiration and make sure you water those young trees long and deep. good luck

Personally, I would use a dwarf mondo grass as a border. This is a fairly cheap plant, and would do well in a circle around the tree. I live in zone 9 and it does well as a border around our citrus trees.

If you have access to natural stone or paddock rock they would be good, but the use of the old bricks would be OK as well.
If you have long beds you can go with the timber idea, but you would have to buy treated timber as the natural it would rot quickly. Other than those ideas, a small concrete edging would be ok if your hubby is the do it yourself type.

Home Depot sells a steel edging product made by col-met. It's easy to use/bend in a circle, won't rot, is tough...cheap...and lasts forever. Far as I know it comes in brown and/or green color.

I'd go to Lowe's or home depot and get some of those curved edging stones. They can be used else where if you change your mind. Just a thought.
