I would pretty much say its an Old Wives Tale, but to be honest who is going to know if it is not given with love? or with best wishes.. Most people wouldn't give you a rose if they didnt care for you.

No its a plant not a psychic psychologist!
Plants being plants really dont care about the intent of people.. they just want to get a nice bit of moist ground to sink their roots into, an occaisional shower, a few relaxing days in the sun and theyre happy!
If I could use rose plants as "love detectors" I would be a millionaire by now.

No that's not true.
But be careful, if you eat poprocks and drink coke at the same time you might blow up..or get pregnant. I can't remember which.

You're the one who has to love the plant for itself! If not, then it's obvoius you're not going to care for it and then it will obviously die!
