I have noticed for a while people are painting their nails real dark at the moment, but I read in a magazine that you shouldn't do this yourself as it will go wrong. I really want to do this though and wondered if anyone had any tips?

If I paint my nails a dark color I do it one of two ways.
Always have a base coat so the polish doesn't stain your nails..
I will paint them as carefully as I can and then take most of the cotton off of a Que tip and dip it in polish remover and get the excess off my skin with that very carefully, or I will paint them as best I can and then when they are completely dry I will take a long shower and when my hands get kind of pruney from the water I will rub off the access from my skin/cuticles with a sponge or poof, that's why they must be all the way dry- (I do it this way at night usually and the other way in the morning). I usually get good results. Once in a while I may have to redo one, but not most of the time.

If youre painting your nails a dark colour make sure you put on base coat first. This will prevent your nails from becoming stained. Then paint on two coats of your chosen colour. Rest your elbows on a table to help steady your hands. Be patient though, if you dont get it perfect the first time, you can always remove it and start again. Then paint on a top coat. This should help keep your colour from chipping for longer and gives your nails that extra shiny look. Then give them time to dry properly. Theres nothing worse than getting yor nails perfect then smudging them!

Hi there is not reason why it can go wrong. Just as long as you use a base coat first to stop your finger nails from going yellow. I used to wear alot of dark nail varnish ages ago and i did use a base coat and my fingers nails went yellow. But use a base coat and then let your finger nails dry properly before you apply the second coat and move all the excess nail varnish with nail varnish remover with a cotten bud.

Use a base coat first, then try to paint each nail in three strokes. First do each side of your nail (your first two strokes) then your last stroke should be straight down the middle of your nail. If you make any mistakes tidy up with a cotton bud dipped in nail varnish remover.

If you go with a dark color it can turn your nails a yellowish color so use a base coat, but for the painting part just take your time and make sure you have that trusty nail polish remover by your side.

I prefer to have my nails painted by a manicurist when I want a dark color on my nails. I usually paint my nails myself at home but only when I am using a lighter color because it's more forgiving. It's so much harder to paint your nails yourself with a dark color. Good luck!

Just do it. Make sure you clean up messiness with cotton buds soaked in nail varnish remover. Remember once its dry apply a clear coat of varnish to protect it from chipping the colour as that would be very noticeable. have fun!!!!!!!
